It's a subtle but welcome change, for me, to see all these curved edges in SL... from the loading progress bar to the translucent window around chat. It may even feel like OS X in a way. ;) I really like how it makes me feel this inexplicable greater sense of warmth, and it's a subtle -- but welcome change. Oh, wait, just said that. (Must be a timeloop.)

Well... one thing that is not so welcome, though, are the "randomly changing text colors". I have noticed that text is colored inconsistently if chat goes on long enough. I had a little fun with it, using a palette of white, green, and red to get my quasirecommended Christmas dosage -- but it's STILL confusing. Some people look like they're talking through scripts, when in fact they aren't.

I'll have to sort my Inv more later today.

Observations, queries? :)

Great Torley.. THANKS. Way to ruin the end of the movie for those of us who haven't seen it yet. Now I need to hit you up for a time-loop refill.

I hate the rounded corners, I hate cutsey crap of any sort in programs, and I am very displeased to see resources spent on worthless cosmetic changes for which there was no powerful demand when we were told that manpower would be spent on bug fixes.

Thanks SuezanneC!
I don't like the rounded corners of chat either. I would rather they work on bugs.

I don't have my XP set with rounden corners either. yuck!

New eye candy
12-14-2004 15:47
Torley I agree and disagree. It is quite lovely looking to see rounded corners on things, but when eye candy causes lag I tend to think it is not worth it. What lag you ask? Do a mouse over on any object on SL. First it renders the box, then it figures out the text inside to decide how big to make the box. There is a 1-2 second lag for it to do this. You may ask, why the big deal? Who cares? Well the more eye candy you add that takes a few seconds, the more lag you pile up in the long run. I love my OS X but I don't love how SL has chosen to make the UI of SL. At least I can turn off the shaded chat. I can't however; turn off the mouseover addition. We don't need to turn into overbloated windows. Please take away the eye candy LL or at least offer default perameters!!! :(

The square tool tips seemed smaller too. Im not wild about the rounded corners, but I will adapt.

I reported the colored chat as a bug, report it yourself so that Lindens know it is a real issue and can get fixed asap.

I noticed the colors too. Annoying.

my colors haven't changed to anything but white yet, but scripts talking are no longer colored and that's annoying. I like the round edges, and I seriously doubt it took much to put that there :P. Or that a lot of time was spent on it seeing as how it's buggy ;)

There is a workaround that seems to fix the colored chat frenzy for me: change the colors to something other than the default.

*In another thread under Technical Issues Andrew Linden mentioned that this problem had been fixed. A new client has been released that is optional to install tonight and may be required tomorrow*

Aw, nuts. Me and some friends were writing down all the text that appeared in green during chat. We were convinced we were gonna find a secret message from the Lindens and win a million $L.

Rounded corners patches are important don't ya know?

It's important to have something soothing to look at just before you crash to desktop after 30 seconds in SL. It's proven that sharp edges make you much more complacent and willing to accept your fate. Baseball bats for example... rounded edges... Crow bars, again note the rounded curve. Most bullets have rounded tips too. It just makes it feel better as a whole before the world vanishes from your eyes.

It seems like every other week, someone comes up with the argument that the Lindens shouldn't touch the UI, or the website, or add new features or sims (!?) until all the bugs are done away with. Guys, you don't honestly think it's the same people responsible for all the work, do you? I mean, Linden Lab employs 35 people.

The people who do the website are not the same people that do QA, or the people who talk to investors, or the programmers. Time spent working on the UI or LSL isn't time taken away from fixing rendering or stability bugs, because not everyone is working on the same task. Nor is everyone working on a single task -- someone can take a break and focus on a seperate task for a while. I'm pretty sure that's not what led to the 1.5.8 UI changes, but if it is, isn't it a better use of Bugfixer Linden's time to focus on some other part of SL rather than playing Minesweeper all day to unwind? :)

Excelent point. Sometimes we to get blinded by feature creep, where we should just relax and be happy with the bugs that have been fixed.

I just want to be generally unhappy that I crash to desktop after being in world for 30 seconds...

it's not a happy thing... especially after going through everything except an OS re-install to try and get it to work...

As for the actual rounded edges, I guess it's nice. After all, if it wasnt for rounded edges there would be no dildoes, think about it.

well they say one pain is capable of replacing another.... It certainly makes you forget about the crashes for a while while you squirm in your seat
