So there is going to be a Log--a-Thon at 19:00 PDT tomorrow (or, more globally, on Monday August 1, at 02:00 UTC).

The purpose of the test is to have 5000 players logged in at once so that Linden Lab can stress test their system more than it has ever been before. Linden Lab is giving out significant prizes in order to help induce people to join in the two hour activity. In particular, I believe that they have instumented the asset server (the machines that hold all the images, builds, clothing, avatars, everything) because that is their known point of greatest performance bottlenecking.

But I forsee a problem and don't know what to recommend, thus the dilemma. As has been noted many places recently, when the asset server is most stressed, it makes errors, some of them pretty grave. Perhaps the most annoying ones are where pieces of peoples avatars have been swapped with other objects, shoes replacing hair, your jewelry getting replaced with someone else's shoes, etc. LL policy is generally to not compensate players for items eaten by the asset server for a number of reasons (hard to do, no "proof of purchase", etc.).

I'm tempted to advise people to *NOT* attempt changes that they wouldn't mind losing during the stress test. For example, buying a L$10k object in this period is probably ill-advised as would be building or taking a building into inventory and so on. Indeed, I expect that the asset server will begin to smoke just by having to dress 5000 avatars and rez the world for them.

I don't think that this recommendation will either comprimise what LL is trying to test, nor am I sure that it will save people from lossage. Good Luck.

Good points, Mal.

I plan on logging in, and staying logged in for the duration if possible. But I won't be working, building, playing with inventory or shopping. Most likely, I'll either stay on my own land, or find a communal spot with music I like, and just chill. And since you have to be logged in for at least half an hour to be entered into the Lifetime Account drawing, (which I want!) I won't be teleporting either.

And if the grid is broken by this tress test, and SL is offline a few days - ah, what then?

I agree with your advisory Mal! I was planning to take these percautions myself, but sometimes I forget not everyone knows about past issues and such. So thank you for posting this! I think the advice is sound and agree it will not hurt the testing any. :)

Blaze knows what I watch while building in the middle of the night! TV Land is good for endless hours of valuable mindless drivel extremely conducive to the building mindset.

I could play WoW, seeing as how I bought it, but after SL I find it, and its ilk, about as exciting as doing my own dental work :D

I've even advised some friends not to get too busy creating today in case the asset server gets really borked and has to be rolled back to some prior checkpoint. Yes, I may be a party pooper, but I really hate seeing people lose work/time.

I finally quit at level 57.. end game sucks.. plus all my guildies that were at 60 and tired of waiting on me, moved to other games. I've actually got one *THIS CLOSE* to joining SL. I'll convince him tonight at the Pink Pony. ;)

Yes, I would also recommend just hanging out - not changing anything - I am sure SL will have a backup made at 6:5999 or so :o
just in case they need to recover anything

I will have to leave some spare FreakRockets about my lot then, I'd hate to have a DB missing error when I'm randomly annoying people.

Hmm good advice, Malachi. I think today is the day for wearing my slinky black catsuit with matching shoes and gloves.

I'm not going bald today though.

Same here. Got to level 50 and just lost interest. B-o-r-i-n-g.

Actually, I've already planned to do exactly what Malachi and others note. I will be floating in our pool with my friends and SL family, chatting, but I won't even dare to change clothes much less move for 2 hours. All I ask is that the grid stay up.

That's not too much is it? :)

I'm for Lineage 2 if the grid goes down!

And as for the grid staying up being too much to ask? We'll be lighting candles and sending prayers.. as long as we don't take them out of our inventories!
