I'm 90% sure I already know the answer to this and I don't like it, but I thought I'd ask in case there is a way around it. Suppose I have a piece of land I want to rent to someone to have a store/club/museum/whatever and I want to let them change the music, delete trash items that get left by visitors, and ban troublemakers. Is there any way to give them this kind of permission without having to deed my land to a group and make them members (which would then give them a big chunk of my dwell payments)? If someone knows a way to do this I'd really really appreciate it if you could share it. If not, umm consider it a feature suggestion.

Two out of the three (music and banlist) can be accomplished. The music is pretty easy by just making a control box and using llSetParcelMusicURLLots of people have made custom ban products (before the land ban list stuff came out) and can use a combination of llTeleportAgentHome and llEjectFromLand. As far as the trash goes, you can set land to a group, without actually deeding it. This would allow you to use the auto-return system without having to worry about others in the group being about to release/sell the land. *edit to add more links.

Thanks for the reply Pete! That is very helpful. I wonder, not having done anything with groups and land before, if you set it to a group as you say, would you still as the owner get all the dwell or would it be split?

I could be wrong here.. but I believe I remember someone posting that the current situation with group land is you get the percentage of dwell earned on group land that you have donated/deeded to that group.
Like I said, I "think" that is how it works.

I think the percentage thing is only for the US$ monthly Developer awards, but not daily dwell payments which still get split up evenly.

There are effectively two levels of group land...
Level 1), you assign a group name to a land plot without deeding the land to the group. This enables the group building functions and allows auto-returning of objects, leaving the ones create by you OR the group. As long as the people building have assigned their objects to the same group name either manually or by wearing their group privs while building. All dwell goes to the land owner.
Level 2), Land is released from your ownership and taken control by the group using group land allocation. all the above applies but as the landowner is now the group, the dwell is split evenly between the group members.

Thank you for clearing up the distinction on the two ways to do groups. That could come in very handy. I wonder if someone can clarify using llSetParcelMusicURL , the Wiki says that it works "if the owner has the rights to edit the parcel options." So If I own the land and it is not group owned land, normally I can't give other people permission to edit the music options. Does the wording here mean that if I create and own the scripted item with the llSetParcelMusicURL script in it that I could give a copy of it to someone to allow them to change the music? Or does it still go back to the fact that only someone who could open the about land panel and change it manually (in this case just me) is allowed to change it with a script?

Scripts run with the permission of the owner. So as long as you own it, it will work. you'll just need to make an interface that allows someone else to change the URL (and of course, do the appropriate checks on who that person is, etc. etc.)
