Is it normal for a woman, during labor (i mean having a baby, not being at work. yes, i know having a baby is work), to grow a beard? I just saw a horrific picture from a friend of his new baby and the mom.

Pointy beards and small horns growing from the forehead are quite common during labor.

Some women do grow a bit of facial hair from all the hormone madness of pregnancy but I don't believe I have ever seen a woman spontaneously sprout whiskers while pushing.

Hmm I thought you would be, like, overflowing with estrogen during pregnancy! How would that make you grow a beard??
*rubs her own smooth chin* I've always been glad I'm not a man.

Actually it has to do with the sex hormone binding globulin. High SHBG binds the androgens (male hormones) present in small amounts in women and keeps women from growing facial hair, chest hair ect. During menopause and pregnancy the ovaries are not ovulating as normal causing the SHBG level to drop and may cause increased hair growth because the androgens are freed into the blood system. This also causes pregnancy related acne.
The use of estrogen replacement therapy or birth control pills increases this SHBG which helps reduce androgen caused acne and male pattern hair growth. But after pregnancy most women find that the hair will become fine again on its own.
