Well, after taking a look around Charlotte I am going to need a cowboy hat.
Life in the rest of the state is much different than living at the beach.
Is there anything to know about cowboy hats? Material? Shape? Size?
It's kind of spooky but my love of accessories is really liking this new style.
I even went and bought 5 country music CDs. I just picked ones with cute guys on the cover.

From: someone my sister lives in charlotte. they don't wear cowboy hats or listen to country music. Clearly your sister worships the devil. This is a thread about fashion. Unless your sister is named Donna Karan, I don't see how she helps.

sorry, my mistake, I read your post as a complaint about Charlotte and what people wear and like there.

I just like to dress up and a cowboy hat will be lots of fun. I just don't want to get the wrong kind. (if there is a wrong kind)

Neehai - when I lived in BC Canada I used to go to the rodeo in Calgary and I bought a Stetson, it is a really nice hat and of excellent quality. http://www.stetsonhat.com/I never stooped to listening to Country Music though...

The cowboy rule: Never wear a five-gallon hat if you have a 10-gallon head and vice-versa. (G-Dubs is the worst offender lately) as for me, I like the Clint Eastwood "outlaw Josie Wales" style - or the supa cool low riding cowboy outlaw style like Waylon Jennings

Whatever you do just promise that you will not start wearing a bolo tie with one of those goofy paisley vests.
Besides that welcome to Charlotte...remember to check your personal liberty at the door of the nanny city.

Western style is something I'm fairly familiar with since my dad is a cowboy (rodeo'd and everything til he got too old) and we always had horses and cattle when I was growing up. Neehai, there are so many different styles of cowboy hats now, you'll have a wide range of choices. One basic rule of thumb is that most often you wear a straw hat in the spring/summer and a felt hat in the fall/winter, but that's not always the case; you can pretty much wear what you want, whenever you want. Country/western superstar Tim McGraw has made black straw hats more popular, but I still prefer the white or off-white ones; it's totally up to you. Felt hats have always been worn in a wide range of colors. I find dove gray or dark brown felt hats to be particularly attractive. The best thing to do is go to a western wear store and try on some hat styles to get a feel for what will look best on you. Ask for advice, too, if you see a salesperson there who looks helpful and knowledgeable. I prefer the classic "roper" style, with a wider brim and a shorter crown on men, but that's also because I've been around a lot of cowboys who prefer that style because it looks more "authentic." You can find hats with narrow brims that are sort of stretched to point down, fedora or Aussie-style hats with a smaller brim and triangular crown, even modified bowler styles. One piece of advice about wearing a hat is to wear the brim somewhat flat; tipping it back on your head looks sort of dorky, IMHO, and you don't often see real cowboys do it (when George Bush plays dress-up in western wear, he always looks to me like a farmer, not a cowboy). Also, be sure to ask at the store how you should store a hat; we always used to set them brim down on the edge of a shelf so the tip hung out over the edge; this was so the brim didn't lose it's shape due to being set on a flat surface. I believe you can also safely store them upside down, with the crown down on a flat surface. Two more things: 1) Some people hold that it's bad luck to put a hat on a bed; 2) Real cowboys wear Wranglers, not Levis.

I'm one of the very few men who will wear a cowboy hat in Boston, and I look damn good when I have it on my head, if I may say so myself.
A lot depends on the look you're looking for. A beatup old straw hat with a tattered brim can look just as good as a brand new Stetson. Personally, I like the black felt, with a nice hat band and a feather on the side for a touch of style.
Oh yeah... And go ahead and wear the bolo if you want. Mine is a sculpted bull with 2 red stones for eyes.
