Role Definition: Program/Release/Configuration/QA Manager

Are you a Second Life resident? Have deployment downtimes cramped your style? Could you prioritize bugs better than we do? Is managing software releases on three platforms simultaneously at 6am your idea of fun? Are you a meticulous list maker who likes organizing things and then posting the data on web sites? Are you confident enough to delay a release because you don't have time to test a feature?

If you are all of these things plus smart, creative and energetic, then you might be who Linden has been looking for. Linden Lab is hiring for a Program/Release/Configuration/QA Manager position. You must have at least 5 years of relevant experience managing software projects, releases and/or QA. Please submit your resume as a notecard to Cory Linden inside Second Life. RESUMES SUBMITTED IN ANY OTHER WAY WILL BE IGNORED.

my $.02 as bay area resident and former qa manager. i don't think cost of living is a gating factor. many qa managers live out here.

i can't speak for project mangers, but...
no qa manager worth their salt wants to do project and release and configuration and qa.

project and qa are fundamentally opposing jobs. trying to put them in one position is a no-win situation for the person holding that position.

i would have broken the job up as:
- 1 - project manager
- 1 - qa manager
- 1 - a release and configuration engineer reporting to either manager

or:
- 1 - project manager
- 1 - qa senior engineer or lead reporting to the project manager with promotion to qa manager as the group gets large enough
- 1 - release and configuration engineer reporting to project manager

if i were in the job market, i wouldn't touch the job with a ten foot pole.

but i still love the method of resume submission.

I think that this explains why SL is such sad shape:

Are you a Second Life resident?
Narrow the field of potential employees.

From: someone
Could you prioritize bugs better than we do?
Who couldn't?

From: someone
Is managing software releases on three platforms simultaneously at 6am your idea of fun?
This suggests expected poor planning.

From: someone
Are you a meticulous list maker who likes organizing things and then posting the data on web sites?
Woah, there are plans to let the customers know what is happening?

From: someone
Are you confident enough to delay a release because you don't have time to test a feature?
There is the assumption that there is not enough time to test and that the current model is to release without testing, this also explains a lot.

Program/Release/Configuration/QA Manager position.
No wonder LL expects that the person will not have enough time

They expect professionals to respond in this manner?

OK, so this is all a large joke by LL.

Who couldn't [prioritize bugs better than ll]?
having worked in qa, this isn't as simple as one would think.

not really. service environments tend to update at the wee-hours.

heh... there are limits to this.

there is never enough time to test "enough". the trick being, decide what is enough.

as hiring methods go, this isn't out of the norm for entertainment and/or software companies.
