"In God we trust" replaced "E Plurbibus Unum" as our national motto about 1909. The orignal suggestion was "God, Liberty, Law" by Rev M.R. Watkinson and it was later changed by then Treasury Secretary Salmon P. Chase.
Edit to say my dates were off. It was placed on coins since about 1909. The original letter to Chase was in 1861 and about 1863 James Pollock (Director of the Mint) came up with the "more suitable wording".

The national motto adopted by the Founders was inscribed next to the Great Seal of the United States, a decoration devised under the supervision of Franklin, Adams and Jefferson. It was Jefferson who suggested "E Pluribus Unum," and that slogan was adopted in 1782, five years before the Constitutional convention of 1787.

But surely Jefferson and the other founders meant this to be a Christian nation, didn't they? Why did we have to wait so long to impose religion upon the Godless heathens? It's an outrage, really.
