There was a rumor running around that the Lindens were going to make efforts to eliminate sex, sexual themed items, etc.. from SL, because, as I heard it, they couldn't advertise or receive government funding because of the very large amount of sexual content and activity in SL. Is this true? Partially true? Where does this rumor come from?
The rumor concerns me since Second Life is the only game where that sort of thing is allowed so freely. Second Life has been all about expressing ourselves freely, and I would hate to see SL being censored. Anyway, before I get too far into the argument, I'd like to get some more concrete facts behind this rumor, preferably from a Linden?
Thanks, Demi

Being censored would be alright if you can turn if off or something. Sorta like The Sims, you can download something to turn it off and in The Sims 2 there is a console command (A.K.A. CHEAT!!!) to turn it off!

Um, no.
Totally baseless accusation.
LLabs is not in the censorship business, they're in the database provision business (ie SL).
BEsides, it's technologically impossible.

Thanks, Demi My intuition is that somene is trying to link "Sex" to Club Events with a detremental effect of Community morale to help the defense of those that oppose Club funding. State the origination of the rumor, for currently the rumor is comming from you.

Well they can certainly avertise, even if this was a Sex-only game. As for govt funding...what kind? I don't hear about any other g-rated games getting govt funding. Why would a santitized version of SL get it?
YAY SMUT!

From: Aimee Weber Government funding through a Monthly Subscription Fee? Wait..what are you talking about? The Government of any MMORPG is the Company that maintains the game in which they control the Economy with Policy.

Except the orginal poster is clearly refering to RL gov't, not to the player-base.

I heard that LL is desperately trying to spend that 8 million on some ads, somewhere, anywhere, and NO ONE will take their money because there is SEX here! Government funding? Wow I needed a laugh thanks. I am a Washington DC lawyer and that one actually had me smiling.

Think about it people

I talked to both Robin and Phillip yesterday and in so many words, as says the announcement, they are trying to "clean" up second life. That is why they want more educational events..the sex thing I think has gotten out of hand, which they let happen and now they don't know how to control it. I personally think, hey its a free world, its a game, do what pleases you but in my mind and from what I have heard this is definitely something they would love to do.

Philip's AV wears chaps and multi colored underwear. THAT's something to think about. I'm fairly certain the Lindens see sexual freedom in SL as a boon rather than a liability.
