On occasion, things happen in this state that actually make me embarrassed to admit I live here. :o

Man Tries to Steal Gun to 'Rescue Schiavo'

By Associated Press

March 25, 2005

SEMINOLE, Fla. -- A man was arrested after trying to steal a weapon from a gun shop so he could "take some action and rescue Terri Schiavo," authorities said.

Michael W. Mitchell, of Rockford, Ill., entered Randall's Firearms Inc. in Seminole just before 6 p.m. Thursday with a box cutter and tried to steal a gun, said Marianne Pasha, a spokeswoman for the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.

Mitchell, 50, told deputies he wanted to "take some action and rescue Terri Schiavo" after he visited the Pinellas Park hospice where she lives, Pasha said.

The feeding tube that has kept Schiavo alive for more than a decade was removed March 18 over objections from her parents. Schiavo's husband has said his wife would not want to be kept alive artificially.

Doctors have said she would probably die within a week or two of the tube being pulled.

Randy McKenzie, the owner of Randall's Firearms, said Mitchell pulled out the box cutter and broke the glass on a couple of display cases.

"He told me if I wasn't on Terri's side then I wasn't on God's side, either," McKenzie told The Associated Press.

McKenzie said he then pointed his own gun at Mitchell and ordered him to lie on the ground. But Mitchell fled out the store's back door before police arrived, he said.

Mitchell was later arrested in a parking lot and was scheduled to appear in court Friday. He was being held on $125,000 bond on charges of attempted armed robbery, aggravated assault and criminal mischief, officials said.

It was not known if he had a lawyer.

Seminole is about 5 miles west of Pinellas Park.

I work part-time in a local shooting range/gun shop.....You never, ever, wanna try to rob one of those places, everyone (including the college kid who collects the brass) is strapped at least once. I never like to carry, but they make me when I'm on the clock...

What a novel idea! Go to a place that sells guns armed with a box cutter! Those guys don't carry! They are like the guys who work at McDonalds but have lunch at Burger King! They couldn't possibly be armed! They don't REALLY like guns, do they?

Ok, now we have a gun. The gunshop guys were all in back eating lunch and watching their soaps! Mission accomplished! On to the hospice!

Ok, we are here. Its go time! Gotta get past those praying wusses. The time for prayer is over. Its time for action. Wow, the media is here too! Hope they get my good side.

Outside Terri's room now. I will save the day! All I gotta do is knock out the guards, steal a uniform, and just walk past the prayin' folks, cops and media! Piece of cake!

That was easy! Out the door, and on the road. Now, she needs to eat. I hope she likes Chik-fil-A!

Sounds like a good solid plan to me! My HL mod scenario was realistic and spot on! Time to try this for real!

Oh it gets better!

Michael Alan Meywes was just arrested by the FBI for offering a bounty (on the internet) for the death an unnamed judge (50k), and Michael Schiavo (250K).

So it's ok to kill perfectly healthy people to "save" the life of a person who has been in a vegetative state for 14 years... :(

It's ok to break the ten commandments and kill others if you have a mission to save someone else?

Exactly.
This case is bringing some nutty weevils out of the woodwork.
To be fair, many conservatives and/or christians think that her feeding tube should not be reinserted. It's just the kooks who are getting the publicity (plus some talk radio and newsmedia personalities)

I think it's ironic how most of these people supporting the continuation of Terry's life against her wishes (according to her Husband who lived with her 5 years and has taken care of her for 14) are the same Conservatives who support the was in Iraq...

... so basically it's okay to send troops to die, 10,000+ civilians die, etc... but somene who actually wants to die, can't.

F***ing crazy.
