didn't see this anywhere else so here it is...... From: someone Second Life 1.5.14 Feb 1, 2005 =================================
- Fixed an exploit where no-copy objects could be copied.
- Fixed an exploit where no-transfer objects could be given to another user.
- Fixed a number of object permission bugs.
- Preliminary work to make sure that each region is always assigned to a server with the same processor speed. This will resolve variations in region server performance after we restart the server cluster. We have not yet assigned particular regions to particular servers -- this will happen in the next few weeks.
- Changed notification text on discovery of Intel Extreme Graphics chips to indicate that they are not currently supported.
- Allow PCI-Express graphics cards detected as PCI to run in the higher-performance AGP mode.
- Removed a link in Advanced Skills help file.
- Various database optimizations and changes focused on inventory, IM and chat.

Seems like something organized is finally being worked out to rotate out the older servers based on age/specs, and this should result in some true happiness for people who've been eking out a 7 fps existence in the neighborhoods serviced by them. Hip hip.....huzzah!

I REALLY hope this doesnt mean that some sims that NOW are running smoothly will be shifted on worse machines turning hem into lag hell. Making things better for some residents is always a good thing, but not if it's at the expense of others.

Preview does not want to work for me

Preview does not want to work for me, it insists on downloading a new version even though I have downloaded it twice and installed it three times now.

Shiryu, I hope so too, and perhaps am reading too deeply between the lines, but it seemed that Robin was talking about a systematic way of upgrading the grid with newer hardware, while not ignoring the older sims because, well, "they're already there".
At least, that's my hope. With luck, the older servers will be rotated out to serve as "water" in some of the empty areas of the grid, to help pad the world with continuity.

The way it will work is the older a sim is, the older a box it gets, with the exception of "void" sims, which get the oldest hardware.
So, in essence, every sim will most likely end up on something faster than what it was originally started out as.
(However, due to the fact that the Lindens "mistakenly" started randomizing what servers were assigned to what sims, some sims got "unfair" assignments to servers that were better than they started with, and people came to expect such "better" servers until the grid came down again. Once that happened, they usually got "worse" servers, and whined about how laggy their server was now. This will solve all of that but making sure each sim is always performing at the same level it was the day before (assuming unchanged content).)
I'm glad to see they're finally getting around to doing this.

Yes indeed, I hope this will create some more fairness and overall decent average speed for all sims...
last night I was in a Tringo mood and at the first Tringo game I went I think it was on a server numbered as 23 or 40 something... it was way too laggy to play....had to leave liek other did. Crippled event. Can you immagine to prepare and plan for an event to then have it all ruined because that day your land was on a crappy server?
Later I went to another tringo event where server number was something like 293 I think... and no laggy enough to spoil the game... Surely unfair for the first host as he should have the same chance as everyone else to host games etc...
I'm no here to start a thread on complaining etc... just to say tha finally it is nice to see an attempt to sort this hardware issue out and hopefully, shortly enough, we will all enjoy a decent to good frame rate all over SL world.
Hopefully a step in the right direction

Hopefully a step in the right direction Please note that this isn't going to provide consistant level of performance across all sims. This will provide consistant performance within a sim. The sim won't be #2 one day and #450 the next. So an older sim like Da Boom will still get an older server. That said, the oldest of the sims WILL be part of the unimportant servers, like the void sims, and, most likely, the sandboxes, since we're not supposed to use those for heavy script work.

I can just see the land barons rubbing their hands together at the thought of people constantly moving around to get a better server. I can also see the older sims becoming deserted

From: Yashu Vindaloo another release and they STILL have not addressed ghosting... Meant to answer this earlier... Ghosting has been around for AGES. I'm sure they would have found an answer by now if they could.

From: Moleculor Satyr The way it will work is the older a sim is, the older a box it gets, with the exception of "void" sims, which get the oldest hardware. the very very oldest are going into their r&d lab. then they'll fill the voids, core, et cetera. it's good that they're retiring some the oldest from the grid entirely. for example, tringo ground to a near halt a few nights ago on a private island assigned to sim7. we had thirty people and an simfps that ranged from one to twelve. that hardware isn't going to work for any sim on the grid. i also deeply hope that an upgrade schedule will be published so that we'll know what to expect. it'll likely be stated in ranges rather than exact months because well just because.
