Spinal Cords Repaired- Ananova.com

This is very, very interesting. Cant wait to see where it goes from here. :)

"Until now it was believed that nerve cells of the spinal cord could not regenerate or be replaced but Prof. Dr. Andrey Brjuchowezki claims to have proved the opposite.

He took the stem cells from the patients' nasal mucous membranes, which is particularly suitable because of the many neural endings it contains, the paper said.

The cells were than artificially bred into neural tissue stem cells, which were afterwards gradually injected with bio-gel into the damaged areas, regenerating vertebra by vertebra."

PS.
Forgive the title, please. I had to.

LOL. I'm going down to the hospital today to see if I can donate my boogers for science :D

Oh, and next time someone makes fun of me for picking my nose, I can claim to be harvesting stem cells to help the cripples!

LOL chip!!!!!

*forgive me a naughty chuckle*.....
I am thinking right about now that I should have both eggs AND snot frozen for future use. :p

I wonder if this works with stem cells from anyone's nose, or does it have to be from your own?
*goes to reread the article*

In the future: urban legends about waking up in a hotel realizing thugs have sedated you in the night to harvest your nosegoblins for sale on the black market.

I LOVE IT!

Eh, old breakthrough. Israel's been doing somethiing similar (stem cells for neural regeneration of the spine) for a long while now. Year or more at least.

LOL! They're not using mucous! They're using cells from the nasal mucous membranes, silly. :D

"Is that a spinal injury??" "No, it'snot." :D

/whisper
i know, i know! I read the article!
but its more FUN to think of it as using SNOT to fix your spine. Humor me. ;)

OT: mucous membranes. say it out loud. doesnt it *sound* nasty? Kindof like "moist".

On a serious note, yes...absolutely.
I know theres a lot of fun being poked in this thread, but in all seriousness, this is an incredible thing.
and if the doctor making the statements in that article is fudging his results, I hope that karma rewards him appropriately for all the false hope he's created.
Something like this would make SUCH a difference in the world- imagine...
We carry within us the ability to repair grievous injury, it just has to be properly harnessed. Thats a huge and hopefull thought. :)

I don't know what happened, Doc. He sneezed, and his spine shot through the top of his skull!
