Hmmm, more promotion of SL as a money making vehicle. And Philips two examples of things you can do in SL: build a club or a mall.

I *hate* the pretend news style of this. It's an obvious paid-for advertisement pretending to be a report, I guess from GDC.

The logo in the upper right corner is 'G4' and 'T' which is the cable gaming channel 'G4'/TechTV http://www.g4tv.com/. All of their spots look like bad commericals. ![]() -Ghoti _____________________

it all depends on what av he is using

I had the unpleasant experience of running into Philip Linden on Sl and then again i can probably be sure that was him on my land to as he owns land next to it. and both times i can tell you he is not cute and his attitude matchs. i guess it depends on what image he wants to portray. the ones i saw were actually ugly and when i said hi both looked down on me like i as a piece of trash and went on staring into space.
i guess to some people he puts on a really cute av i guess those who he wants to impress. |

I *hate* the pretend news style of this. It's an obvious paid-for advertisement pretending to be a report, I guess from GDC. You wanna know how these things work? I have some experience in these matters, so let me explain. Virtually ALL news reports that have anything nice to say about a company are arranged by said company. That in no way means however that the company "bought" the news organization's time in producing and showing the story. I'll use my own company as an example. As a large manufacturer and marketer of houseware products, we have been featured in many culinary magazines, gardening magazines, newspapers, television news programs, cooking shows, etc. In every case, there was a legitimate news report being shown, but in most cases the news organization did not come across the news by accident. Let me explain. You see, like most companies, we have a PR department. Their job is to make sure the public sees us in the best possible light. To that end, they constantly send out information to news organizations about anything positive going on with the company, whether it be new product information, happy customer stories, students who have won company scholarships, etc. Anything good that happens gets written up and submitted to hundreds of news organizations across the country. News organizations are ALWAYS looking for things to report, so they welcome it when the news comes to them, and every so often they decide such a story is worth their time to follow up on. Then they end up doing a piece on it. In business as in life, you'll get passed by if you wait for attention to come your way. If you want to do well in anything, you have to promote yourself every minute of every day. I would imagine this particular news report was no different. LL most likely had a story they wanted told so they submitted it to various organizations capable of telling it, and one bit (in this case, Tech-TV). It's certainly possible that a reporter came across the story on his own, and then decided to investigate and produce the segment, but that kind of thing usually only happens when there's something bad to say. Whenever reporters have anything good to say, it's a safe bet that the story was handed to them by whomever is the subject of the story. That in no way decreases the merrit of the story. Everything in it is true. It's just that reporters are human and human beings have a tendency to obsess on negativity and ignore the good unless the good is pointed out to them. In the news, just like anywhere, if you want someone to say nice things about you, you have to give them a reason to do so. For your girlfriend, that reason might be the dozen roses you just bought her. For a news reporter, a person who constantly needs to find things on which to report, the fact that you've done that "finding" for him so he doesn't have to do it himself may be all the reason he needs. Most of the news you see, good or bad, was handed to a reporter by someone. Even Woodward & Bernstein were handed the story that made them famous. That's just how the news works. _____________________

OMG! He said money! Get over it! Not everyone will be drawn into SL because they can be a furry, fairy, dragon, beauty queen, all in the same day. Linden Labs will have to use some mainstream marketing ideas to draw people in.
The point of a business is to turn a profit, there is no other point to business except to turn a profit. Anything else people say "we are doing it for the kids!", "I wanted to give something back", "This is my passion", blah blah are people blowing smoke up your ass. The top priority of a business is to turn a profit, anyone who says anything else is an idiot, or runs a non-profit. Second Life has to be promoted in a way that will draw in your customers and drive the economy. Even if people don't like it, $$$$ and cents is what matters in RL and SL. If people want to pretend SL is some utopia, that is fine, but if Linden Labs wants to stay open and we as members want SL to survive and strive, then it has to be about the $$$. *hums* Ain't nothing going on but the rent... And I have to agree, Phillip did look a little hot... ![]() _____________________

The point/complaint/whatever isn't that he "mentioned money" but that when asked for a reason to join SL there's always a disproportionate emphasis on the ability to *make money* like making money is the only unique selling point of SL. I mean operator sanctioned commerce in game is pretty unique right now, but it's not the only thing that's better about SL than treadmill games. Then, trying to give an example of ways to make money he cites opening a club or selling stuff at a mall. Wow, like SL needs more clubs and malls, I hope lots of people see that and join up thinking they're going to open clubs and make lots of money. That Phillip obviously doesn't understand the ecconomics of how clubs operate within SL (or isn't saying because it doesn't make such sexy copy) is an interesting aside.

This is an old clip, its the party LL gave celebrating and promoting when animations were first introduced to SL, and the winner of the contest that was held at that time. Its not at LL, but at an establishment in SF not too far from LL. I believe the clip is at least a year old.
Alot has changed, an SL year is equal to what... 10 RL years? Still fun to watch tho.. fen- _____________________
