I have been a member of Second Life for awhile now. I searched for a niche and finally found one in land or so I thought. I deal in land because it brings me pleasure; this I readily admit. I stand alone not belonging to any groups, though asked, trying my best to keep area's free for homedwellers to have a low lag places to live. Now I have found myself caught up in what I consider a sever crisis in Second Life.
First off I am not and refuse to be a member of any "Land Barons" or any group that may chose to manipulate land to their benefit in Second Life. I am also extremely concerned about the "new generation" of individuals that are looking to make Second Life a profitable business for their monetary gain. I have refused to join these people and their endevors also when approached. I personally find them a dreadful influence on Second Life as a family.
Yes I could buy a private island to be free of this. But I feel that the future in that is a dead-end for what Second Life started out as. I haven't and won't buy one as I was delighted when I first joined to find Second Life a real community. I had been in V/R's that didn't afford this opputunity and had the majority of their worlds in isolation. I feel that if Second Life continues along this path it will suffer greatly. To me it was always the community spirit that counted in making Second Life such a wonderful place. It is truely a sad and bleak image to see Second Life members cut off from each other in such a manner. Perhaps I am reading into the furture but still this worries me greatly.
I also feel that a responce in dumping large are's of sim's (ie snowlands & deserts) the incorrect appraoch to the situation. All they seem to be doing is leaving the very people theyare trying to help with worthless land that cannot be sold. Yet at the same time nice sim's going for sale in auction are going for a VERY high price. I wonder what is being accomplished by this. It seems to me only leaving an opening for the very people that want to use Second Life for their own purposes and profit. In essence turning Second Life into a money making machine and manipulating Second Life and it's residents for their own profit.
Second Life has changed as any growing thing must. This to me is a good thing if handled properly. Ijust ask you, my Second Life family, to think and realize just what is going on and whom is responcivle before giving a knee-jerk responce. You have the power to change Second Life into the best place it can be. I hope you excersice this power with thought and fore-sight.
As a caveat I think that open coding is a wonderful thing helping Second Life to grow in fantastic ways. Yet it is a powerful thing that i hope is used with discreation and for the good not the bad.
