Ok, I want to ask the smartest people I know about this...cause I am a paranoid mofo......

What is the possibility of someone see you from a V chip? Explain the reasoning behind it....someone said its like a two way mirror.....please explain this to me and where I may purchase such said device.....LOL

The V Chip is pretty benign, actually. It doesn't monitor your viewing in any way. It's simply a device that can tell what rating a program has (TV-G, TV-PG, TV-MA, etc.). It allows parents to block programming not suitable for their children. That's all.

As for the smoke detector thing, how would it transmit? It's certainly possible to have small microphone/transmitters in such a device, but it wouldn't last long with only one 9 volt battery if it was constantly broadcasting. It would have to broadcast at such low output that they'd have to have the black van parked in your driveway to listen in, or the battery would go dead in days or weeks instead of months.

If you want to get paranoid about something, do it about RFID chips. Now THAT is scarey big brother stuff!

Yes, all new TV's have had V Chips in them for the past several years, but like I said they're nothing to worry about.

RFID is something else. It stands for Radio Frequency Identification. They are little chips that can be powered remotely by a reading device from as much as 30 or so feet away that send a unique ID code back to the reader. Companies want to use them to replace bar codes and make things like inventory and returns easier (since they can be read at a distance without direct line of sight). The problem is this... let's say you buy a shirt with an RFID tag in it and you pay for it with your credit card, then that item's unique tag is now linked to your personal information and any time you pass by a reader it essentially knows who you are. They won't be used for real-time monitoring, but they will certainly be used to create databases of information... in the short term they'll just track your movements around a store, but in the future readers may be everwhere. Tire manufacturers even want to put them in car tires. It's easy to see how this kind of thing can be very useful for business (remeber the scene in The Minority Report when Tom Cruise walks into a Gap store and a voice welcomes him by name and asks how he likes the sweater he purchased last time? And the billboards that address him by name as he walks by?), but the data that will be collected can too easily be abused, especially by the government. They've already done things like subpoena supermarket bonus card databases to try and build a profile of a "terrorist" based on food purchases (people who like hummus and olives beware!). It's pretty creepy stuff.

OMG CHIP!

I had no idea. That is totally freaky....I read they are pretty durable too and that yes you could remove it....but first you gotta find it.....acckkkk.......now you know this is just gets to me because they also state no law that a label must be put on such items to let the buyer know.......

Yep, those things are bad news. Some of them can be killed by microwaving the item but I hear the newer chips survive it. Like it or not, here they come. I hope more mainstream press starts covering the privacy concerns on these things. Most people have never heard of them. As far as I know they aren't in use in the US yet, but Walmart, Gilette, and a bunch of other companies are testing them in Europe. They aren't ALL bad. You'll be able to get your groceries tallied just by wheeling your cart past the reader so grocery checkout should be a lot faster, but you just know they'll be used in less beneficial downright icky ways too.

If you want to see the RFID chip taken to its logical conclusions, watch "Minority Report" starring Tom Cruise. Same basic concept with the advertising.

Uhm...

Can't you just remove the RFID?

And you know what irks me? People who call one-way mirrors two-way mirrors. A two-way mirror reflects in both directions. A one-way mirror reflects in only one, and allows people to look through the other side. One-way, people. One-way.

Wal-mart is currently testing RFID chips in 5(?) stores in TX, in conjunction with several vendors (HP among them). They're using it for inventory tracking.

But if you want to be scared, consider this: The new multi-colored US$20 bill has an RFID chip hidden in one of the president's eyes. By the time they get around to doing this with all the new currencies, you'll walk into a store and they'll know exactly how much cash you have on you. Targetted sales.

Moleculor, this is also the reason that you can't just remove the chip. They're so tiny that they're impossible to see with the naked eye.

I'm not exactly familiar with the technology, but I've read that the chip itself is tiny, but it requires an antenna that can be seen. Its not exactly invisible.

I don't believe RFID chips have an antenna. They're very tiny. Most people aren't going to want to destroy whatever it is they just bought trying to find it. We'll have to rely on third parties selling RFID killers.

Here's a good overview of RFID http://www.nocards.org/AutoID/overview.shtml

You're probably carrying around a lot of them in your pocket. Newer american bills have RFID in the eye of whatever politician it was... dont microwave them!

Why the hell is everything in that article in quotes? They wanted to "microwave" his "wallet?" They're making it sound like a sexual innuendo.

The two way mirror thing is like this, your monitor, even the new fancy flat ones(neeed some serious tech) and televisions, all emit RF. With off the shelf parts you can point a small forward gain antenna at homes, office buildings, apartments and isolate the RF from these devices. You can then take that handy modulated "noise" and with some cleverness display it on your own monitor. Using nothing more than modified television receivers in some cases.

This same trick can be done using light reflected off walls/objects in a room with a spotting scope and an oscilloscope. No, not looking at the monitor directly - reflected light. Yes with quite readable results. >300 meters LOS to a window. Keeping the lights on helps – adds noise(heaps of photons) to the signal.

And there is also the ability to read data directly from your modem, computer (HD LED), router (some models) by reading the light pulses emitted from the little activity LED on the front. > 500 meters.

New product:

Keychain fob that emits a RFID jamming frequency.

That'd be nice.

.....i wish i could have your attitude......

many reasons......and well maybe you dont mind being tracked and a data base of information being collected about you that could be used not only on you but a relative, friends, groups you are associated with. If you need examples....then your not paranoid enuff and should abandon this thread...
