I sent a series of in-game messages to Colin Linden and then 3 days later I sent a mail outlining the situation; never did I receive a reply on either. So now I'm here for my last ditch effort to try to get some Tech support for this game.

I am on a Linksys (wired) router. I have 2 PC's hooked up to it. I am on Cable modem.

I can not play the game when I am on my router due to latency. It's near impossible since the lag is *SO* bad I can't even have a simple converstation. When I am off my router the game runs fine. As per the instructions in the Service & Support > Knowledge Base I have opened the specific ports to help.

Jeff mentioned something about being the DMZ host *blank stare*?
The help page in Knowledge Base mentions directing to the LL server IP's *bigger blank stare*??

Jeff spent about 30 mins with me trying to figure out what I can do and I used up all of his brain power (sorry Jeff) and then sent me to contact Colin.

Colin?? Would you be SO kind as to offer me some help THIS time please? I'm reduced to public begging, so nice of you :)

If *anyone* knows how to help me out here I will very very grateful. I haven't been able to play the game but for ONE night (came off of my router) in 7 days and at THIS rate this is a HUGE waste of money for me I can spend otherwise.

I had issues like this when I was running everything through my old Apple Airport base-station to do NAT sharing, but only after I upgrade my machine... anyhow long story short:

The Apple basestation was running half-duplex on my network and just wasn't able to keep up, I was getting collisions on my switch. So I went out and bought a Linksys that does full duplex properly, and made sure all my machines are set to it. Now everything runs fine. So.. best I can think of is to make sure everything is running full-duplex as that seemed to sort out my issues. (Unfortunately this is all pretty specific to different network cards and stuff, but at the least you should have lights on your router that indicate if something plugged in is full-duplex or not, usually labled "FDX";)

You might also try lowering your bandwidth setting in-game, so it pumps less data through.

1. Don't do that.
2. Next time post int he right forum
3. Call Linksys, not the Lindens
4. Don't turn on DMZ, whoever told you this dosn't knwo what he's talking about. (I'll explain, The router is a hardware firewall, what DMZ does is lower ALL protection for that computer.)
5. Is it an old router or a new one? I have a 3 year old linksys and i'm fine on SL or anywhere.
6. When you call linksys they will tell you to do a couple things. A) Reset your router, their is a little button in the back, hold that down for 2 mins. B) If your modem is old, it may not be able to handle the packets. I know my old cable modem was not able to handle more then 1500 packets at a time. So I had to set it so the router wouldn't suck that much. (if it did it would disconnect)

Blunt? LOL ya a wee bit ;) Guess I should have started by saying that I'm far from a "know-it-all" and I am still learning how the "system" works in here :)

I didn't find the right forum, which is why I landed here. Had I seen a forum which was blatently clear about Tech Support I would have posted there - if this thread can be moved to the correct forum, by all means :)

In game I have my settings down on the bare bones to compensate. My network rate is at 200 as well.

Since the game works 100% and then some, I know its not my graphics card which is a Ge4 128.

My cards are at full duplex, that was one of the "troubleshooting" steps me and a network-savvy friend of mine did to see if that would help.

I appreciate all the help and what I can piece of out here is that I can call my provider and check on the age of my modem and see if that would be an issue.

The few people that I've talked to, friends of mine who can play the game on their routers, all have the same settings as me and therefore I'm pretty confused on why I'm having issues.

I never thought to call Linksys, but I'll be running to their website right now to see if I can find any information. Not that I would understand it since this is all new to me and pretty much greek at this time. But I'm a smart cooking and if explained properly I pick up quick.

If there is any additional information that would help, I would certainly appreciate it :)

Things to try.

1. Patch your router's firmware to the lastest version

2. Use the WinMTR utility from the Download section to see exactly which hop on the Internet that is causing the problem. If the problem really is your router you will see bad packet loss at the IP. (Probably something like 192.168.1.254 if you are using a default NAT setup)

3. Disable/Turn Off any and all firewall features on your router.
If you are using pure NAT (meaning your 2 computers have internal only ips (like 192.168.*.*) and share one outside IP) you will be fine security wise.
Those crappy consumer level firewalls are not going to do you any good under a NAT setup. Only your router will be exposed to the public. So just make sure your router is patched up and has a strong admin password.
Though, if you are mapping real ips to one or both of your two PCs then you need a firewall. The only reason to map ports is if you are running some sort of service on one of your computers. Which I doubt you are doing.

Thanks Aaron - I went out today and got a new router and I have all the latest firmware installed. That's the only part of your post I truely Understand *LOL* But I'm learning and I'm on hold now with Linksys to get direct support on this.

Colin, yes I did receive your reply today - thank you so much for trying to help me out hon :)

I would like to thank everyone for helping, it means a lot to me. I don't like to yell out for help much for fear of looking like a *gasp* newb or even worse *gasps again* moronic fool, but I'm way over my head here and figured this would be the place to ask since I'm surrounded with intelligence :)
