Just HAD to show this to everyone. That first post, by Loki deNiro, is the stupidest thing I've ever seen. Go back and forth on that article and look at all the posts by Loki DeNiro. They're all equally stupid. He made up his own political party, drawing the most extreme democratic ideas and mixing them with the most extreme republican ideas. Yay, fun! Linky linky.

I like how "Loki" implicitly referred to the "world" as the United States (since he mainly hit on US-only issues). Stupid lecture time. (or mild humor if you prefer) The population of stupid is approximately equal to at most 40% (completely made up statistic), not 90%. However, the percentage of non-thinkers (not stupid, but rarely using the brain for anything more complex than an American Idol contest) is approximately 70.2%. Although there happens to be a great overlap between these two populations, (most stupid are also unintellectual, but not all), it often appears that the true stupid population is closer to around 90% due to the combined effect of the stupid+unintellectual. (Is anyone believing this crap?) However, many unintellectuals (and sometimes even the stupid), possess other redeeming qualities, and should not be shunned for their lack of brain usage. For example, Forrest Gump. How's that for a stupid statistical report? That's the verbose version of my take on "stupid people".

An observation:
It seems that about 90% of the population believes that the other 90% of the population is stupid, stupid, stupid. It seems to me that these assessments are self-defeatingly subjective.
I mean, just think of Jay Leno's whole "Jaywalking" bit. People find it amusing because Jay goes out and finds all these (supposedly) stupid people who fail to answer correctly questions the viewers at home find childishly easy. It feeds into the whole mentality that everyone is stupid (except one's self). In reality, the Jaywalking segments are likely heavily edited so as to feature only the very dumbest of the dumb, and even in those instances it's not always obvious that the people being quizzed are taking the quiz all that seriously.
But it's an illusion most of us are willing to buy. One of the tiredest cliches floating out there these days are "people are getting stupider all the time." But it's clear that not all of us are in the elite top tenth of the population when it comes to general intelligence.
I've actually thought about this a bit, and I've decided that it's most likely that when we look out on the world, we see two kinds of "stupid" people: Those who are objectively, unarguably dumber than ourselves, and then there are those who are actually smarter than ourselves, but whose thoughts and motivations are beyond our comprehension so that their statements strike us as stupid. I believe this is how it seems to almost everyone that everyone else is a regular dullard.
Indeed, I've been at the pointed end of a number of heated rants, most of which at some point infer that I'm just an idiot who hides behind a big vocabulary and long-winded, winding prose. I must admit that, in many of these instances, the sentiment is mutual if not symmetrical. So we have two people in disagreement, both of whom believe the other to be out of their league. This seems to be a common occurrence, actually, if my experience reading the forums is any indication.
I won't even try to find a way to objectively measure the stupidity of people so as to avoid this subjective bias; rather, I take the observation as a lesson. While I may not always be respectful of viewpoints other than my own, I take criticism seriously. I constantly try to remind myself that every person knows something, has something I can learn.
Ultimately, I don't think it's a matter of who's stupid and who's not, but rather, who's willing and able to learn, and who's cut themselves off from new experiences.
That said, I have to agree with others here when they say that SL seems to have attracted a higher caliber of player, generally speaking. Most of them are no doubt speaking from their own experiences in other MMORPGs, experience I do not share, but I do have experience in other on-line communities that are a great deal more disrespectful and closed-minded than this one is.
Most would probably argue there is nothing in SL to keep stupid or immature people occupied -- I would argue, actually, that there is plenty such material. I think the tendency for more thoughtful individuals to access and to stay in SL may have more to do with the technical specs of SL (a broadband connection being required, for example) and the minimum age requirement (which is undoubtedly imperfectly enforced, but serves at least as a partial filter).

I have often found myself wondering whether the average IQ is falling. It reminds me of an sf tale I read many years ago about a situation in which that occurred, when the President of America met the Soviet leader (it was a while ago) and used such diplomatic language as: "Hey - you stay offa my turf, punk!"
There is no doubt at all that the British broadcasting services have been 'dumbing down' for some time now. The BBC, supposedly our flagship TV service, gives us a diet of cookery, gardening, DIY and reality TV, with very little else. We once had a radio station (the Third Programme - now Radio 3) whose content was completely intellectual. There was classical music (of a kind that a classical musican would enjoy), high-quality drama, scientific and historical lectures, etc. About the lightest programme they had was 'The Brains Trust'. Now when you switch over, you're just as likely to hear jazz or musicals or a brain-dead children's programme (I assume it's a children's programme) where the announcers play animal noises along with the snatches of music.
The visual aspect of TV is concentrated on, to the detriment of the verbal. Rapid cutting is the technique du jour, and it sometimes seems to me as though our TV programmes are designed for people with ADHD.
In my lifetime the BBC has gone from being the finest public broadcasting company in the world to a corporation that specialises in the mediocre. To add insult to injury we are forced to pay over £100 a year for the pleasure of receiving this stuff.

Well if we want to talk about the next dumbing down of society... TV/VCR in SUVs/Cars/etc
I think SL as well is dumbing down. I think that SL could either be 1) A late night skinimax flick on Cinemax or 2) daytime soap opera that could show right before or after Days of Lives and General Hospital.

Yeah but we have far more draaaaaama than Days of Our Lives and General Hospital put together. SL is more like Oprah or Jerry Springer. Only with cute widdle avatars mouthing off in type instead of shouting and screaming at each other (although I'm sure the people behind the cute widdle avatars are prolly shouting and screaming at the screen). So yeah. Oprah. With scripting and prims. Now what was my point? uhhh...

Siobhan, The thing I feel genuine shame about is that the people who did this to the BBC are the people of my generation.

Well Phineas agrees with me at least. It's not just BBC dumbing down, media in the US is too. I heard that it's now written at something like a 6th grade level, maybe lower. But I blame unintellectualism and other cultural changes rather than "stupidity". I think it's partially the fault of capitalism (we're used to the short message style of mass advertisement, short commercials, etc.), partially because we're busier (work hours and so on), partially the fault of time-saving fast computers--which keep getting faster (does anybody with broadband really think they have the patience to go back to dial up?), and partially due to "entertainment" distractions that nobody has a decent attention span anymore. Now if you successfully read that entire long friggin sentence, at least you know your attention span isn't THAT bad.

Just think of all the accidents they'll have when they try to watch their Jackass DVD while doing 120 on the freeway. Natural selection.

Consider this:
Stupid people thrive and multiply because humanity has no natural predators. There was once a time when wild animals hunted and ate the weak, slow and stupid. Now, we can defend ourselves. Nature's built in culling processes have been beaten.
These days, the stupid are no longer victims of nature. They are victims of their own acts. No other animal in nature has invented activities like bungee jumping, storm chasing or binge drinking.
Medical science has advanced to the point where stupid people who would have died in the past can now be saved. They live to continue breeding, and raise even dumber kids. In some cases, every new generation is even more stupid. Case in point, the Bushes. At the rate they are going, the twins will have kids so stupid, people on reality tv shows will look like Mensa material.
Bottom line: The herd isn't thinning fast enough. The stupid survive and multiply.

Speaking of stupid...
The plumber came by to fix my clogged kitchen sink.
1)He tried to force the clog down leaky, carroding WWII era pipes by plugging one drain and running the garbage disposal...
2)Which blew up the pipes and spewed sludge water all over the kitchen. The he asked if I had any towels or dropclothes to soak up the mess, as HE didn't have any...
3)When I asked him if this ever happened to him before, he said it happens to him all the time.
Not that I'm a plumbing expert, but if I noticed one of my tricks consistantly blew up pipes and flooded the place, I'd switch tactics or at least use a bucket.
4) Once he repaired everything, he told me to rinse off the floor (and other kitchen things that got sprayed) "right away" to prevent further damage from any residual drano
5) Within minutes of saying this, he went outside and turned off the water for an hour so he could tinker with the pipes in the unit upstairs.

Ok so this means we could start an industry that makes "I'm Stupid!" signs and make a fortune oh and we do have to include the ones that say "I'm Smart just too damn lazy to show otherwise!" Now that would hit about 70% of the world population...LOL
