*coughs and blows nose* So it seems I got a bit of the old cold. It's almost gone now, thankfully. Anyone ever noticed a pattern? I get fever on my first day, then the second day it fades and I get a really runny nose, then on the third day I get all phlegmy and my voice starts sounding like James Earl Jones, lol. When I can speak at all. Anyway I did some minor digging and it seems that the "cold" has nothing to do with temperature at all. I was taught that exposure to cold temperatures could weaken our immune system, but apparently I would have to be shivering like a maniac for half an hour for it to have any effect. It's just that people are indoors a lot during the winter and they keep their windows closed, so it concentrates the virus and makes it easier for it to spread. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_cold

I was taught an old remedy for the cold i do not recommend using this if you have to drive or do anything productive for that matter except lay in bed.
Take a shot of jack daniels mix it with honey and take the shot. End of story. I dont know if its because after a few of these you wont care about your cold or if there is some magical healing power within the ole kentucky mash.

I do those as well billy...whether I am sick or not lol...but usually the one my oma made had whisky, lemon juice, honey and hot tea or cider. Her remedy for congestion was not as pretty and had something to do with onions and garlic fried in lard put into a handkerchief and tied around your neck...don't really know if it cures a cold but you won't get attacked by vampires or be subjected to sexual harrasment for a few days. PS Hope your feeling better Eggy

Ah, sounds like the old Hot Toddy remedy...
Whiskey (Vodka works too), honey or brown sugar, lemon and hot water...
Basically, it's a way to get energy (sugar) and vitamin C into you. It would probably work as well without the alcohol, though not nearly as much fun.

If you do a search for bacteria and antibiotics on the Internet, it's actually some fascinating stuff. There's a little war going on down there. Our body has tons of defences to prevent bacteria getting in (which is why we dont die each day). The bacteria that stand any chance at all of invading our bodies have really cool mechanisms for evading detection or destruction. But the body's systems are pretty powerful, so still something nasty has to happen to the body to let bacteria in. Which is all completely offtopic of course, since colds are caused by viruses Azelda

Viruses are weird little mechanisms.
