Hey, does anyone here know anything about the Torque engine? I just downloaded a demo and it looks damn tasty... I'm actaully considering buying. Whatcha guys think? Is there anything better (within a reasonable price) for making multiplayer games with large 3d worlds?

It looks like they have changed it since I last looked. You used to have to publish through them. Now you just have to pay $10,000, but only if you take in $500,000. That sounds a lot more reasonable to me. It sounds like your project is just for fun, so this is probably not even an issue for you.
Here's an article about it. http://wire.ign.com/articles/370/370232p1.html?fromint=1 |

The Torque Engine is what they made for tribes 2.
If you haven't played Tribes 2, perhaps theres a demo of it. When you buy an engine that was specifically made for a game, and then later, stripped of its game content and put up for sale, you need to realise that the engine was SPECIFICALLY made for the game and then broadened afterwards (if at all). So as with any engine out there, including Second Life, the further away the game that you want to make is from the game the engine was made for, the exponentially harder it becomes to make that game with that engine. For example, making a turn based RPG on Torque will be many times harder than making it on (for example) RPG Creator. Making a first person shooter on Tile Based Platform Game Engine is going to be neigh impos sible. http://www.cyberloonies.com/game-engines.html That might help you some my advice is, find something that fits your wallet, has games already created on it (so you know it works!) and those games are somewhat similar to the one you plan. If you have no game planned, ... plan one before you decide how to make it! |
