But even that would suck, because who would want to listen to a whining wussy toaster? Is he gold plated? If that's the case he should just be melted down into gold ingots. Help the economy some, and stop being so damn useless you stupid bucket of bolts! R2 is 1,000 times more useful than your tin man ass, and he's shaped like a salt and pepper shaker FFS!

I was in the Air Force for 13 years.

Recently? I've been thinking of going in, probably as an officer since I have a degree. I don't know how familiar you are with how things are now, but if you have any advice I'd love to hear it. Especially anything that pertains to the initial training!

As long as you're not married, and have no kids, or other relationships of the romantic kind, go ahead. Join.

If you're married and/or have kids, the military is the absolute worst, most cruel thing you can possibly do to them. 'specially kids.

*speaking from experience*

It's a good job if you don't mind being told what to do. Much better then the other services. Better food, better facilities, more freedom in a lot of ways. Lots of ways to further your Education very cheaply while in. Enlisted training includes Basic, and Technical schools. Officers have OTS. Talk to a recruiter, doesnt obligate you to join.

Agreed. From the standpoint of having been a DoD employee, the Air Force has the best deal of any of the services.

One thing I'm worried about is ending up in a "bad" job. I know you can get a guarantee when you sign up; but during wartime or for whatever other reason if manpower is badly short in certain areas, can they reassign you to a totally different job? I want to get into software development or any other type of tech job (especially good if it transfers over to a civilian position well), since I have a Computer Science BS right now.

Although, if I could pretty much have a guarantee to stay in the field I want, I wouldn't rule out staying for a long term (assuming I liked it). I'm not sure if I should choose the reserves or not, either. This is my toughest life decision ever and I'm very slow at deciding anything. lol

You can get a guarantee from any branch but it's no good unless you get it in writing, just like anywhere else. Someone with a BS in Computer Science obviously isn't going to get a "bad" job, but it could very well be a fairly boring one, just the same as in the civilian sector. You might want to look into the Navy, too; the uniforms are better looking!

If a good job is your only objective, you probably should steer clear of military service. Patriotism and service to country should figure into a decision to join the military.

I've already thought about that, no worries.

A boring job certainly isn't a problem either...I'm just concerned about coming back into this (tech) job market years from now when even more jobs are exported overseas, if I don't have some kind of worthwhile job skill...I'll really be screwed.

Be sure to research the specific job you want. Most software used by the military is developed for it by civilian companies. Make sure you find what you want first.

How do I research that? Just look around the AF websites?

Thanks I'll keep that in mind.

If I start off with the reserves, is it hard to transfer over to active? Or if I start with the shortest length contract, is it tough to get that extended? Or...is it possible to change jobs after a certain amount of time?
