everyone really needs to cut the whining. especially the newb's! SL is a complex and vastly wonderful game, full of soooooo many different things that could go wrong. Do you really think Linden Labs isnt doing everything they can right now? They are prolly pulling hair out and prolly pulled people outta their beds to come help get everything back up. Maybe its just me, but the most recent Newb's seem to have quite the additude for people so new to everything. And the comment before about "linden labs pay attention to your customers"???????? You ARE apparently new lol SL is the ONLY game IVE ever played that the creators actually come IN GAME. we are ALL they listen to. We can talk to them, ask them for help , give them ideas...help them make more of this great game. im with all of you who cant get on. Im irritated, havin withdrawls and ect ect, but people need to be understanding. this isnt to every one, its just to the people being nasty or out of line thats all, cuz it irritates me when we r given such a great gift like SL n then people always find somethin to bish about. Sorry...lol maybe its the withdrawl talking LOL neways see u in game guys

We can whine because we're paying customers. You'd do the same if your internet service provider was offline a day. At least with an ISP if they're down for an extended period they give you compensation.

wow, so much vitriol. Hey, I wasn't whining. I was being a smartass, inseparable from my basic make-up, I guess
![]() And honestly, I've never played a game online where the creators -didn't- log in, daily, if not moreso. Perhaps I'm just a little more selective, and go out of my way to look for involvement on the part of ownership.. *shrug* At any rate, I like SL, I'm not thinkin' about leavin', I'm eternally a n00b, and No tickie, no laundry.. or something.... ![]() |

New yes I am but not to MMORPG's only new to SL btw.... and to you I might add don't know too much about a variety of MMORPG's because yes the (DEV's) are in game all the time I've played with them been on raids with them and really enjoyed the activites they've had going on. So my reply is yes other games have creators (DEV's)come and play ... I've been there and done that. I'm not trying to be a jerk just setting the record straight.BTW I've been playing SL now for 2 weeks and have had nearly 48 hrs of downtime In my arrogant opinion thats not a good record for a game thats been out for over a year.

It kinda is necessary if you wanna respond to someones quote that its clear what your quote'n vs what your actually saying...heh ![]() |

Downtime...
12-30-2004 23:39
William -
Some good points about the dev's being in-game in other MMO products... But a counter-point: Its a very mature and stable system now; but go dig for stats on EQ the first year it was out. A fair amount of down-time there, dude. And EQ didn't have player-made geometry, rights-handling, a physics-engine, or anything like that. I'm not making excuses for them; heck, I spent 3 days trying to get a networking issue resolved, enjoyed 1 day of SL, then got caught in this outtage... But I personally know several others who claim that this is NOT typical. So I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now and see if a pattern develops. The bottom line is that its still an evolving system and its not perfect. But that's part of the price you pay for a complex game you can get for $10. If it becomes an issue over the next month or two, then by all means cancel. But don't judge the product on only a brief experience - I think you and I are just unlucky to be starting at a time of trouble. ![]() Take care, --Noel "HB" Wade (Tread Whiplash) |

the truth is, there are good points pro-and-con to the SL way of doing things.
I think it's safe to say, however: 1. If you want this to work like an MMORPG, don't go past a basic account, cause if you can't pay 10 bucks for a lifetime chance to experience distributed content creation, you are a lame fool. 2. For all you ex-MUCK/MOO/MUSH ers out there, come on now. Enough glitches happened without a 3d environment. I mean, this is our dream scenario. 3. Understand the difference between special-purpose machines and general-purpose machines, and you will understand why SL has a much harder time of making it smooth and flawless, compared to EQ or something of that ilk. Or for the less CS major set: Why does your XBox look so damn good and smooth compared to your PC? Same OS, essentially. Think about it. 4. On the other hand, money needs to get spent for hardware. If only for redundancy purposes. Sorry, LL. This is one place where you so far seem to have dropped the ball. If your shareholders are on your ass to not buy new machines, then you need to do a buy-back, hire a new CFO, or declare bankruptcy. That's just some agency-problem bullshit. I know that the dev team works hard, and they are doing their best to make it all work out for everyone... I have read their words. They all seem like awesome ppl. But if they can't get support from above, they are doomed. 4a, as a customer of this service, I want to know not just what the managerial bureaucracy thinks of what is going on, but what the OWNERS intend to do for us. So I can make a RATIONAL consumer decision. So to sum up, I think you have done an awesome job so far LL, just don't let things break down now. Everytime you add a new sim, that is a comp that could be helping everyone else out. _____________________

Hmmm, Downtime happens to every virtual game. Getting ticked off and ranting about it doesn't make the system come back any sooner, if anything it makes the wait seem 10 times longer. lashing out at the company doesn't do anything but tick people off more & in the end once the system comes back online all the ranting and raving gets forgotten, til the next time. ![]() |

everyone really needs to cut the whining. especially the newb's! SL is a complex and vastly wonderful game, full of soooooo many different things that could go wrong. I think everyone here totally appreciates the job the technical staff does and are grateful for their hard work; everyone from developers to network administrators. What most people are complaining about is the business decisions that are being made. You also have to realize that when it comes down to it, this is a business. LL is in it to make money, not for the good of mankind. Think about your phone service, or your ISP. They are also a complex networks. Would you call them if you constantly lost service or you had no dial tone? Would you expect someone not only to correct the problem, but to make sure they would do something so it would not happen again? Same thing here. How much whinning to expect is probably directly proportional to how much its spent on the game. If you have a $9.95 lifetime account, it probably won't kill you if the service goes down for a few hours or a couple of days, but if you are paying over one hundred bucks a month like many do, well, then it is another story.... - T - _____________________

Despite my own frustrations, I haven't felt very motivated to come on to the forums and bitch at LL, but threads like this are starting to make me WANT to. Some people are presenting the situation like Linden Lab is a group of my friends who need my emotional support in this difficult time for them. But my friends don't charge my credit card every month. If people can't bitch and moan when the entire danged grid goes down for a day, when can they bitch and moan?
Personally I think the Lindens are big boys and girls who can accept that a bunch of "whining" is to be expected in a situation like this. And I bet they know that if it gets fixed and doesn't happen again soon, the downtime will be mostly forgotten during the next crisis over land scanners, freebie resellers, spying college students, land barons, furry haters, unexplained suspensions or whatever. Sorry to be so pissy. I'm glad there are also threads thanking the Lindens for their hard work and innovation. _____________________
