Call me a geek, but I was just wondering..what does the actual hardware that hosts SL look like? Is it racks and racks of servers? Any Lindens have pictures? Just curious.

was wondering this myself...particularly what the specs are on the cluster nodes.

Or maybe this is a "trade secret", heheh.

They are racks of servers, and not located in LL's HQ, but rather in some colo company called Level 3 or something.
Each rack has a "theme", like the sims in the north are all named after colors, and the ones in the south are all named after streets around LL's HQ.
I vaguely recall hearing someone say they were all 1GHz P3s but it wasnt a linden.

Someone that has benchmarking scripts told me that the older sims in the south are actually slower than the sims in the north. Maybe the northern sims have upgraded system specs?

Did "someone" take into account that southern sims are usually busier? :)

1U rackmount Pentium 4 servers running Linux, costing about $1000 each. That's all that's been said and that's all I know.

Level3 appears to be their colo provider, Level3 being one of the larger owners of network infrastructure in the U.S.

I have heard rumors that not all the servers are equal in specs, but none has been confirmed by the Lindens.

Level 3 is a "Tier one" ISP, on the same level as worldcom (uunet), Global Crossing, etc...
