Oh well, if it makes it run alot better, no more lag, being frozen, or getting kicked off let them have their time.

The TOS covers LL's rear by promising zero uptime. So the legal debat is over.
But next comes the question of, "How many SL users will vote with their feet when it comes to downtime". Personally, SL has not even come CLOSE to alienating me when it comes to downtime but then I don't pay anything to play SL. However if Philip REALLY wants to create his own country rather than just another game, he may want to keep an eye on the business people in SL that invest time, energy, and RL$ (for their own sims for example) so they can make a RL livelihood in SL. If their losses become too great they WILL vote with their feet and that is not something I think LL wants. So the bottom line is... Linden Labs SHOULD give Kick back to users when they feel downtime is starting to cause an exodus. Otherwise I don't think they are morally obligated to give us anything. -aimee |

SL being down is an unpaid day off
![]() I'm willing to accept that SecondLife will be down for unknown lengths of time because of internal issues... It's a pretty fair trade for our "game" not having a sort of system where if we have problems we have to wait for a GM to answere our "ticket" that's been up for 14 hours *cough* WoW *cough* LL has a kind of family atmosphere goin on- and I've always gotten personal attention from a linden when i have a real problem. So I'm good. ![]() _____________________

Kick back how?
US$? That would adversely affect their bottom line, and a service guarantee of uptime would definitely mean higher tier rates for those of us with land. L$? That throws the in world economy out of whack. Breaking new ground is never easy. Keeping the grid up isn't as simple as keeping up a Linux server running Apache. Keep that in mind! ![]() -Flip _____________________

My gladdiction has quasimanifested itself in a new form: I was glued to Senso last night before the grid went down. I kept playing until 6 AM and beyond, and it 'twas not 'til 6:10 AM that Mark finally had the proverbial plug pulled.
Hey, as sad as I am to see the system down, I'm glad stuff is being fixed. Better to have a solid foundation than something that keeps wiggling and jiggling under our collective av-asses. I've said: "A tree planted in molten lava doesn't grow." Similarly, this proverb holds true: "A burning plate of waffles doesn't grow, either!" See how much logic that deduces unto itself? ![]() _____________________

When NOT giving kickbacks causes more losses in terms of user productivity and loyal customers than GIVING kickbacks..then that's when the Lindens need to act. The Lindens need to find out how downtime effects their bottom line, and take action to correct it. All businesses do something like this. "Sorry the delivery was late, we are going to knock 10% off in hopes of keeping your business" etc. LL is no exception. When to cut a deal with the customer to preserve customer loyalty is a difficult calculation to make but it does need to be made. -aimee |

Kick back how? Discount off following month's registration/tier fees. Breaking new ground is never easy. Keeping the grid up isn't as simple as keeping up a Linux server running Apache. Keep that in mind! ![]() Granted this is bleeding edge, but how is what's going on here more than just keeping the servers running the SL application up and running? |

Maybe this is the problem - LL doesn't actually have much to lose when the game is down, as far as I can see. They'll still get the same amount of tier payments, monthly registrations, and I'm sure people can still sign up when SL is down. |

Well I think this is true because Linden downtime is not as bad as some threads make it out to be. But rest assured every user has their breaking point. Flipper has a high tolerance, that-person-you-don't-know-because-they-left-after-a-week-of-playing has a low tolerance. The rest of us fall somewhere in the middle and if pushed we WILL leave, we WILL tell our friends not to play, and the LL bottom line WILL suffer. But I don't think SL is very close to that point. -aimee |

We want KICK BACKS!
12-30-2004 14:13
This gives me the opportunity to get some stuff done in RL, chat with friends from other games via yahoo or AIM, even talk with family! First question to me this morning was " Oh, is SL down?" *laughing*
I am so pleased to be part of the SL community, think the Lindens have so much more on the ball than the "usual" DEVS, GM's. Yanne Proudfoot |

SL Downtime
12-30-2004 14:23
I hear that some big names in SL are getting tired of the recurrent downtimes and upgrades. I think it would be better if LL did what Microsoft do and issued one update per month and not 10 or more separate updates. Big names will vote with their feet - I don't blame them.
Yes, updates have to be done. But only monthly - not updates to the updates to the updates ... |
