This problem was presented to me by a friend who plays SL but is not a land owner. Please be patient with my ignorance, but I'm just writing what I was able to piece together from his description.

Apparently there are "huts" in the Hawaii Sim that can be claimed by a player as long as he "creates" something and places it in the hut, and as long as he logs in at least once a week.

This friend of mine had formed an online relationship with another player and they claimed this hut together, furnishing it, etc. Then the significant other "left" the game for good claiming illness of some family member. Strangely though, the hut's contents very quickly changed ownership to a "new" character and my friend is asking himself whether he is dealing with one and the same person here, because all the objects created by the character who left, now bear the name of the new character.

The question is the following: if a player has claimed a hut and placed objects in it, can he then create a new character who not only has access and rights to the hut and it's contents, but rights that include allowing him to change ownership of the objects created by the former character?

I hope this makes sense to someone. I'd be happy to pass any questions along to my friend. I'm a landowner myself and haven't heard of these "temporary" huts. Any insight will be greatly appreciated.

This sounds like a special arrangement created by the owner of Hawaii. This is not an official Linden arrangement or policy. Right click on one of the huts and edit it, click on "more" to see the expanded details, then look at the general details and see who owns the hut. Next to their name, you will see their profile button, click on that to send that person an IM and express your concerns.

The only way for ownership of objects to change hands is for one owner to give them to another.

If the objects that were in the hut by Person A are still there, and now owned by Person B, chances are Person B and Person A did at least talk.
