Who won the movie contest?
10-03-2003 14:18
Who was the winner? I know who got second, I think. Who took away the grand prize, and do we get to see the films soon?

I'm also curious if we're having a new photo contest anytime soon.

I hope there will be another contest like this. I really enjoyed making my movie (even though I didn't submit it) and would like to submit it when I finish it so I hope there will be another contest! :)

I submitted a movie also. I got a notice in-world, but I haven't seen anything on the website or whatnot.

Would like to see the other submissions :-D

I'm sorry we're late in posting the results! I hope to have an announcement for you later today. The movies will also be available for your viewing pleasure on the resident life home page: https://secondlife.com/resident/.

Congrats WG on 1st Place!

And yes, I'd like to see the others also. I was, to say the least, surprised at my posting in the contest.

And yes, that is me, but I'm trying to sound all documentaryish and I have a cold.

Well gosh!
I'd like to thank the academy, the cast and crew, WETA digital and Lions Gate Films.

And to all the people who supported me during the making of this film, emotionally and financially, I'd just like to say H4H4H4!!!1!! SUXX0R5! You should have got it in writing! Now nothing for you!

(Edit: Is it possible that only two people got around to actually finishing and entering movies that met all the rules? I think it is, which once again goes to show that 90% of anything is just showing up).

*director's commentary track: on *
There actually is running in SL, if you fly in fast and low and land on a flat surface, you can see it. This running was done via an big invisible attachment with an llSetForce on it. In that shot it's actually Washu Zebrastripe being me while I work the camera.

There are actually a lot of complicated shots in there that were somewhat non-trivial to do. There were around 5 different 1x1x1 wood cubes used, 1 that rezed in at the beginning, 1 unscripted one for the shots where it's still, one with an llSetForce for the "charging" shots, one with a seat linked via an invisible arm for the dolly shots, etc.

The hardest thing to do was the final shot. The top half of the cube was way too close the the bottom half for it to slide off just by turning on physics, it would just fall right through the bottom half. There is actually an invisible ramp a few tenths of a meter below the surface of the bottom half, and that's what the top half hits and slides off of.

Also, you may have noticed in the soundtrack, how during the quick cuts between me and the cube, how the cube gets it's own instruments, and how that perfectly synchs up. 100% COINCIDENCE! It's true.
*director's commentary: off*

Just checking: is Bino's film silent?

Yes, mine is silent. And 30mb was the limit for submissions :-D

I probably should have done it in Windows Movie Maker to output to WMV to save space, but I haven't used it and that would have been a waste of my Powerbook :-D

So it was done in iMovie, in 640x480 (didn't notice the 320x240 allowance) in uncompressed, because Quicktime wouldn't play anything else :-(

Honestly, I'm thinking there were no other entries because I didn't put in as much effort on this as I'd like to have, plus with the distorted frames (due to either the uncompressed frames, or my machine being finicky) I wasn't as happy with it.

No special techniques to my film, only hitting ctrl-shift-a and flying around, zooming out, rotating the camera, and hoping I get enough raw footage to make something decent.

So with 5-8 mins of raw footage and 1-2 hrs of splicing, titling, and exporting, voila :-D
