High bandwidth wireless internet access, Streaming video to a cell phone!!!

I'm gonna jump the gun here; How long (if ever) till we can use SL on the go? Does anybody already do this? I'd love to be able to slip on a pair of glasses that connect via bluetooth (or something similar) to a mini powerhouse pc in my pocket running SL. Ahh what the future may hold. And to think; Who's gonna be at the forefront when shit really hit's the fan? I think everybody and their mother will want to communicate like this!

Shoot me if this is the wrong forum to post this in

Imagine a time when today's mid-range gaming systems can fit into the palm of your hand, cell-phone style.

That's when you can play SL from your cell phone.

According to Nokia it's around 5 years away before we have that sort of power in our palms. Kind of exciting really.

That'd be about right. But I'd probably say a bit sooner... not far though.

Definately coming..... There are Pocket PCs now running at 628MHz with 16 meg 3d accellerators. They can handle Playstation 1 games with ease. Main setback really is not shrinking everything down but rather powering it. Batteries probably need more of a kickstart than CPU's and other hardware.

Uhhh.. No not really, I wouldn't want to think what that kind of future holds. At the rate this world is going, kinda scarey actually (to me anyway).

Over here, people regularly use 3G phones with 300kbps internet access. There's no reason you couldn't hook up a computer running SL to one of these, if you can stand the bandwidth bill ...

Without giving away too much of my personal identity, I will say that I am in a prime position to comment on this topic.

I too saw the commercial, and was impressed with VZW's initiative. Most of their emphasis in the past was on how well VZW works, not on features. Push-To-Talk was a marked exception, 16 months ago, when VZW took on Nextel's walkie talkie for cheaper prices.

Yup.

The technology is called EV-DO. EVolution Data Only, or EVolution Data Optimized, depending which company you talk to. VZW has it already installed in the Washington DC area, unrolling it in NYC, Chicago, and some other major cities. It's going country-wide 100 top markets this year. No other company can match it.

The phone, however, I've heard retails about $300 US. EV-DO service is $70/month for unlimited access and promised bandwidth of 500-600kbps - up to 1.5mb/second, right now targeted to business customers. Yes, that's correct. It will get up to bandwidths that beat DSL easily, and some cable.

With a laptop, get EV-DO and you're set. But, I uh... may wait 6 months after your area gets it til all the uh... kinks are worked out.

It's out there, it just costs a good chunk of change.

By my estimates we'll see this mainstream with everyone online anywhere at high speed in about 3-5 years.

Look, no one likes advertising spam.

The other thread was advertising spam.

Although I am interested in the product / service advertised, I'm not interested in letting the precedent be that it's okay to spam the General forum with ads.

So, if you have a good reason why advertising spam belongs in General forum, please do explain.

I dont think that it belongs either but you pointing out everyone only bumps the thread and makes others respond. I think this thread is a advertisment but you pointing it out does nothing.. they cant move the thread atleast i do not think they can. Once again i apologize if you think im picking on you or being rude. Im just getting annoyed.. we dont need more forum police, we have jeska. The only thing i could think of is that you are trying to get a job with LL and your trying to impress.

I have a 3G data card that just slips into the PCMICA slot on my JVC Mini-note. The laptop itself is 1ghz machine that's only 22 1/2 cm x 15 cm, so it's a heck of a lot smaller than a normal laptop. It's also got wireless lan built in. I brought it basically because I like to go on holiday a lot and can take my work with me and it's small enough to not be a hassle in a backpack, but it just shows that portable, high data rate options are there. But, like you said, I wouldn't want to pay the 3G bills I'd get using something like SL on it.

Now I'm just waiting for a Treo 650 so I can get rid of my Blackberry :)

Well, I was serious when I said to sign me up. I like the mall, I'm looking for more shop space, and the owner is reputable. Although I feel it's in the incorrect forum, at the same time I did want to compliment the owner.

Call that contradictory, I guess it is a bit, but oh well.

No, but they can be more wary in the future.

It's fine. We all have our forum gripes, and one of yours is policing. You're entitled to express that, and it doesn't phase me.

Ciao, billy.

Verizon Wireless has a DSL speed service for a PCMCIA laptop card they sell, I would say that SL would run exceptionally well on that. Not sure if its available to the public yet, our store rep was giving us a preview of it a few months back.

If they made SL clients for Linux, and had the ability to set static maps, we could probably do it today, although it would be a tad bulky.

Right now, you can play SL on a laptop computer with an internet access account through a Sprint cellphone used as a modem. You need a cable and software. With a 230kb bandwidth, it's not great, but it's doable. $50 for the hardware and software, $15 a month for unlimited access through Sprint.

What kind of latency issues exist with this? I'm sure its not nearly as bad a satellite, but I imagine latency and packetloss would be just as big of an issue as speed.
