I know this belongs in the Tech thread but since everyone frequents this one, here goes:

I have a Dell laptop, an Inspiron 1100, that seemed to play Second Life fine. Not without glitches and lag of course, but everyone's got that.

I've been trying to deal with this Windows Update that has installed this Intel Graphics Controller thing and for the life of me can't figure out why after I've uninstalled it and installed Nvidia Geforce repeatedly, Windows XP ain't working for me. It keeps saying that "new hardware has been found" and then searches for the best program to execute this new hardware, which of course is INTEL AGAIN. My screen will persist in displaying as 800x600 unless I figure out an alternate, good program to assign to this hardware. I don't have enough money right now to go out and get a graphics card, so does anyone have any suggestions as to how I should deal with this? Maybe some way to make Nvidia my main -- and only -- driver?

Thanks in advance! :)

Did you disable the built in graphics in your BIOS?

When you physicaly installed the video card, it should have come with it's own set of drivers you should use to install independently NOT using the "Found new hardware" wizard.

Sure it was done that way?

When you restsrt your computer, wait for the first screen, the one that says how much RAM you have, and hit F2. That should take you into BIOS. The BIOS setup screen should appear. Once you have it up, it should be under "Advanced" then "Peripheral Configuration", at least it is on my Intel board. Once you locate the on board video config selector you can disable it. I can't guarantee this will solve it, but it did with my system.

Thanks Nolan :) I'm pretty sure I got most of that, so I'll have a go at it tomorrow.

I haven't had my coffee yet, so I may have missed something, but.... have we ALL missed something?

That Dell laptop doesn't appear to have any nvidia graphics hardware built in, so how are you expecting a driver for hardware that doesn't exist to work? It's only got onboard Intel graphics, so that's the driver it needs to work.

<<I don't have enough money right now to go out and get a graphics card>>

That's the line that gives the game away for me!

Freya's right, I'm afraid. The hardware's an Intel Extreme (82845G/GL) with 4MB of video RAM. There's no point trying to get an Nvidia driver to work with this.

Freya, that's people-who-don't-have-enough-money-for-a-video-card-ist! ;)

But I'm afraid she's right. Even I, with my limited knowledge of things technical, know that you can't install a driver for hardware you don't have and expect it to work. Have you ever changed your printer driver by mistake and wondered why all your hard work is coming out as complete rubbish?

You mean that rubbish is my work? Oh.

It is possible that the laptop does have a graphics card. Dell laptops can come standard or upgraded . I have a Dell laptop for work and it has an ATI graphics card instead of on board graphics. Its possible that she downloaded a new intel chipset driver. Or I could be completely wrong.

It's true Talen, but that one comes described as a 'budget laptop' and doesn't appear to have expansion capability. Maybe via a docking station... but that's all.

Yes, it is an Intel chipset driver. I guess I do have an onboard graphics driver then

Well what you should do is find out the exact driver you should be using ( go to the manufacturers web site to find out ) and download it to a temporary folder on your desktop. Then wipe the drivers you have installed now. reboot and install the downloaded driver. It will look funny when you reboot but when you download the new driver all should be well again.

depending on the bios it may also be DEL, but it should tell you. Some machines also display a big loga graphic on startup. in which case you won't see your ram etc. Those usually say how to clear them and see the text but if it doesn't say hit esc when you see it.
