First off, I'm new here. So maybe I've missed it, but from what I can tell, there's no education department in SL.
The building and partying and socializing and economy and everything is great fun, but none of it has much direct impact on improving the quality of your first life. What I'm proposing is setting up an actual university (maybe there is one and I've missed it, in which case I'm sorry)--not one for teaching building and clothes design, but for teaching algebra or computer science or 19th century russian literature or what have you. The classes could be free, tuition based, or both.
Is anything like this being done? I think it would improve Second Life, and be a big selling point.

Welcome. SL is your imagination. Build, teach and enjoy. And please do the Russian Literature classes.

New with SL V1.5, the new estate tools provide the necessary tools to host a virtual classroom of sorts, with enough privacy to allow classes to be held without outside distractions.

I would love to teach some lit courses, or get a book club going in Second Life at least. There used to be a book club, but it seems to have phased out. Has it been long enough now that we can make a new one?

Paging Hank Ramos, paging Hank Ramos...
Look up SL University. However, far as I'm aware, I don't think it ever totally got off the ground, other than folks setting up the campus in Gray.
