I just heard about this company on NPR, amazing! He explained that at their current chip (10gigabits) one could download a HDTV movie in 30 seconds.

it's like once a year there's a headline on yahoo news like "scientists transfer 10 gig from LA to London in 5 seconds!" then you never hear about it again. but then my isp just doubled my speed so what do i know? probably depends on the phone lines more than anything since i have my desktop computer and my laptop connected about a million times faster than my internet connection even tho they use the same cards.

OK... This is a rough history of my personal experiences with online connectivity and bandwidth, but it appears to follow Moore's Law (more or less). All bandwidths are in bps (bits per second)

1990 - 2.4K (my first modem that I used to access BBS systems)
1992 - 9.6K
1995 - 56.8K
1997 - 340K (my first cable modem)
2000 - 1000K
2005 - 4000K (top speed of my current cable modem)

If Moore's law continues, then in two years, my 4M bps should be about 16M bps. That's a long way from 100G bps, so I am a bit skeptical.

On the other hand, Moore's Law is definitely neither linear nor continuous, but rather jumps in in periodic spurts as new technology comes along.

As they say, only the future will tell...

Moore's Law applies to CPU speed, not connectivity, but I understand your skepticism. They are testin their 10Gps LAN beginning next year in buisness environments, with a goal of producing them for consumers in 2007...He went on to explain that the 100 should be ready then, but I think you're right, it will probably be ~2009 before we're seeing them in homes.

I hope we're wrong though, think of all that hentai!

Verizon is rolling out a cable system in the Boston area. 15 mbs download speed for $50 a month, 30 mbs for $200 a month.

That's a feature, not a bug. :D

As far as I know computer motherboards and hard drives are not capable of processing or storing/retrieving data at a rate of 10GBps. I have heard of data rates like this being achieved with a scientific computing place in California, and England, but they were using mainframes.

Lucent have been doing 6 terrabit speeds on their heavy duty core backbone routers for quite some time now (at least since 2002 when they bought out Nextbit Networks).

British Telecom contracted them to create a UK-wide backbone link where all segments are >1tbit (terrabit = 1000 gigabit).

For the home - this isnt going to happen until at least 2010, and that's being very optimistic. (2015 is more likely) Japan is probably going to have the edge in speed for a little while with the recent country-wide deployment of fibre service; but I wouldnt expect consumers to get more than a few gigabit within the next 5 years. (being extremely optimistic)

I think you'll find that's all very expensive, specialised routers and such, no Dell or HP computers sitting on that kind of traffic flow. Home users won't get that speed for ages, and probably won't need it either.
