I have started hearing about traditions involving eating certain things. I am of English and Mid-Western American origin and have never heard of this.
Do you eat anything special, besides TUMS and Alka-Seltzer?

Leftover pizza usually. Not so much a tradition as sheer laziness and starting the year off with an "...Eh.."

New Year's Breakfast...
12-30-2004 23:58
At my family's house, we try to get over the New Year's hangovers with sugar: We traditionally have a big breakfast with French Breakfast Puffs and some kinda quality bacon or sausage on the side.... The Puffs are like little fluffy bite-sized muffins that we roll in melted butter and coat with cinnamon & sugar 360 degrees in all axes. Its Atkins-hell, but it tastes soooooo goooood! Sometimes Mimosa's (spelling? ...Champagne mixed with O.J.) as well; but I think we used up the Champagne for Christmas this year. Take care, --Noel "HB" Wade (Tread Whiplash)

Black Eyed Peas and rice. I got an onion and some fresh jalapeno ready to stew in with the black eyed peas. Once thats simmered up good, I will put it over the rice and have at it. I should have some cornbread, but Im too lazy for that. I have eaten black eyed peas on new years day as long as I can remember, looking forward to it tomorrow

Black-Eyes Peas with ham hocks.
You eat them for luck in the coming year. Eating black-eyed peas represents humility and it is usually best to eat one pea for each day of the coming year.

Interesting. We dont follow any new year's day tradition... but we sure eat a lot of those. We call them "friar beans", they go great with tuna, chopped onion, chopped boiled egg and lots of parsley.

In the southern USA the traditional new years foods are: turnip greens, said to bring you money, symbolizes paper currency. black eyed peas, for good luck. hog jowl (really traditional) or any type of pork for prosperity. corn bread,no idea what it symbolizes, but it goes really good with the other foods. These are traditions passed down through many familys in the southern USA.I can remember my grandparents having these foods every new years and I still carry on the tradition, not so much as superstition but to carry the tradition on.And besides,it makes a really good meal
