The specs seem nice enough, it's just that for the price you're going to pay for that, I could build something that wasn't such an overkill and then upgrade it over the years :D
Of course if money isn't a concern for you... GIVE ME SOME! :D

Yeah, that's a pretty decent system. I've never been that big a fan of VIA chipset motherboards, though, even if they DO come from Asus. Personally, I think I'd probably get a Nvidia motherboard instead, something with PCI-Express instead of AGP. The Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe, for instance.

For the amount of money you'll pay for a 6800 Ultra, you could get a pair of 6600GTs, which should give you about one and a half times the performance of the 6800 Ultra. Even a single 6600GT would be almost as fast, while being half the price, plus you could get a second one if you decided to do so in a year's time and not have to remove anything at all to do it.

You might want to check out some prices at NewEgg. I don't know if you've ever assembled your own computer, or if that's something you'd be interested in doing, but my immediate thought is that you might be able to get a better price than the one quoted.

If I actually take my own advice and check some prices quickly...

Athlon 64 3200+ Socket 939 - $179.00
Asus A8V Deluxe - $135.00
2x Corsair XMS DDR-400 (PC3200) - $273.00
GeForce 6800 Ultra 256MB, AGP - $425.00

So that's just over $1000 for the most important stuff... so yeah, I guess $1700 is pretty reasonable.

However, I would like to point out that you can get a PCI Express GeForce 6600GT for $185 and an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard for $199, both from NewEgg.com. With two 6600GTs, you'd get better performance and future upgradability, for the same money. ($560 for motherboard and video card on the system you specced, vs. $569 for a 6600GT SLI system.)

Honestly, I would be wary of buying an AGP card right now, if you're getting a completely new computer. I wouldn't expect any new AGP cards to ship in future. From here on out, it's almost certainly going to be PCI-Express.

I agree, AGP is phasing out at this point so best to get a PCI MB and get a cheaper SLI capable 6600GT for now. Then wait for the SL OpenGL evolution and Video card combatibilty. I like to watch / play SL at 1600*1200, so a 6800GT would be sweeter for that resolution.
