Thanks for posting that Camille. The need for some form of Linden sponsored contract and arbitration process has been becoming more evident. I'm glad to see that LL is aware of it.

A recent example where this would have been helpful. A sim owner sold their sims. The businesses set up in those sims had paid their $L to rent that space in advance. At a minimum they should have their unused rent refunded. At the moment it is up to the whim of the former sim owner... Losing both capital and a retail outlet can be enough to sink a fledgling business.

And before anyone boo-hoos that. Regardless of if you count it in $L or US$. $$ simply represents time. Either time spent scripting, building, doing graphics (learning all those skills too) OR real life time sweating at the real life job.

I think the article brings up an interesting question:

Would you be willing to pay for a conflict resolution or mediation service to deal with problems in Second Life? If so, how much?

Well, I really like the idea of someone paying Square Trade US$20 to resolve a dispute. I mean, at recent exchange rates a Seburo costs what, US$5-7? And that's one of the more expensive objects I've seen in-world so far. Land... well, forget I even mentioned land prices. Plenty of threads on that already, thank you. ;)

Point was, facilitate something like Square Trade acting as arbiter. It'd be a clean, defined mechanism for how to resolve your dispute, and I think the US$20 price tag would cause a lot of potential disputes to resolve themselves or go away.

Or would it just drive them under the surface? Having the mechanism is no good if no one's willing to use it, and you're less likely to bring in any for-profit, non-Linden arbitration if people aren't willing to pay.
