So I looked through the press releases on lindenlab.com around e3ish, and noticed something about thier plans to put SL cross-platform. Well, a few of us had figured that based on vague forum hints and the whole openGL thing. But I got to thinking - and todays news about Sony's latest Playstation stuff - where its gonna be a PC got me to thinking, now that consoles are getting Hard Drives, (Xbox, and now the PS2) wouldn't it be cool to port SL onto them - I mean, they can be hooked up to broadband, and get yourself a keyboard input thingy. The average consumer might not have a thousand+ dollar gigahertz-class PC with a decent gfx card, but a lot of people can grab a $200 xbox.

The only thing I have to say is this,

Could you imagine playing SL at anything less then 800x600? Imagine playing at 320x240 or 640x480. ewwww... (I currently play at 1024x768 and that still seems like not enought resolution)

I would love to play SL on XBOX Live. I know that we could use team speak now, but the PC interface just isn't that immersive to me.

If (when) SL gets released for the Mac, then I will have no reason to keep my PC around except for as a fileserver. A 2.26GHz personal fileserver. Hah.

Seriously though, my laptop is a G4-867 with a 32mb GF4 420 Go...

My desktop is a P4-2.26 with a 32mb GF2MX...

Although I am considering upgrading the graphics card, as currently the only thing I use the desktop for is playing SL (don't play other games, tho I might start again) and holding files.

Hah. Geez. :-D

You could run another team speak server for all of us. ;)

I am currently trying to hack my xbox and figure out how to "tweak it"

Since the xbox runs a stripped down win2k as a base operating system, and people have successfully ran Linux on it. Why not try to get full windows on it? :-)

If successfull my xbox WILL have SL on it lol. besides it has better video hardware than my pc and costs as much or only a bit more than a better vid card for my PeeCee.

SL is the only thing that has trouble on my PeeCee and I love hardware hacking, so go figure :-)

Hate to burst the bubble here folks, but SL needs at least 256MB of RAM to even start to have reasonable performance. (If you doubt this, find a computer with 128MB and give it a try, I dare you)

I'm pretty sure your XBox has 64MB, so ah... don't spend too much time trying to get SL to run on it.

Yeah... You would be surprised to see how much RAM this stuff chews up... OK, the Lindens wouldn't but you know what I mean.

I can upgrade my pc but I cannot upgrade an Xbox. I have bought every game console since atari (dates myself again :D

I thought about buying the ps2 or the xbox but they become out dated so quickly these days and game companies just stop making the games. That is the one major reason I started playing games on my pc.

I think the PS1 and PS2 have been going strong for a long time. Look at how many games there are for those boxes. OK, they didn't have the staying power of the Atari, but it is just like computers. *looks at her 1.8 ghz P4 and cries*
Well, the good new is that the new front side bus improvements are a very significant step and I think it might be a while before such an improvement comes along.

Pluses and minuses...

The XBox was built to primarily run games. XBoxes don't need the extra ram to run all the crap an average PC has running in the background. Also, consider that ever so sexy Nvidia graphics and audio chipset.

On the other hand, its processor is basically a 733mhz Pentium 3, which falls below the posted minimum requirement of 800mhz to run SL. Anyone who is an avid PC gamer will tell you that the "minimum" requirements usually mean that you will have to turn down all the eye candy, or watch a slideshow.

Put it all together, and you probably have a machine that "could" be made to run SL, but it would run poorly. Stick with a PC to do it right.

It's *not* that I doubt you, Ian... but I am a bit of a glutton for punishment.

Lessee, hubby's system has 2 128mb sticks in it, could remove one of them and find the spare harddrive to drop in, install OS, move the modem over, install SL...

Or oh hey, how many bonus points would I get if I used my old motherboard and processor instead of hubby's?

Lessee, that'd be:
faulty motherboard
500 mhz Athlon
128 mb ram
and let's not forget the whopping not quite 56k dialup connection!

Yes, yes it does as a matter of fact.

I used to see it at 0.0 quite often when I was on the old mobo & processor =)
