Of course, if you have Half Life 2, you can go there, just on a virtual plane. Valve updated news sent me the attached picture of an upcoming HL2 Death Match map. The realism is getting pretty incredible, just imagine what things will be like in the virtual realm five or ten years from now.

but unless you had a janitor fetish or were a homesick C.H.U.D. why would you want to be there?

i have a friend who plays half life and he showed me the game. i guess i just don't get the point of it. before sl i never saw myself as getting into video games and for the most part i still can't see it happening outside sl. it's all either running around in a medieval sewer stabbing people or running around in a futuristic sewer shooting people. are there any games that take place in a big beautiful outdoors world and preferably don't emphasize the shooting and stabbing as much? if you see one dark hallway you seen 'em all even if the graphics are good. :D

the only beautiful outdoorsy thing i could think of would be farcry.. but then that does involve lots of shooting of things,.. and some darkly lit tunnels as well..hmm or u could try one of those american animal hunting games,.. visually quite nice to walk/ride a horse/drive a pickup round.. but unless u actually want to shoot some nice furry animals at the same time, kinda pointless..stick to SL :D

why dont u just go outside if u want to see some nice scenery?

I don't even want to know whats ahead 5-10 years from now. I go on a day by day basis, the thought of this of how things are going is somewhat.. eh.. bah forget it.

Right after I finished HL2, I immediately went back and started to replay the original Half Life. Back when it was new, I was pretty impressed by the original. I look at it now, and it looks so crude and blocky. I'd imagine in 10 years, we might not be able to tell the difference between reality and realistic games.

Half-Life 2 does have some good looking outdoor scenery, it doesn't all take place inside.

Far Cry does look good for outdoor scenery. I dont have it installed to take a screenshot though.

I guess the idea of a video game is to escape the ordinary. Not much call to go for a virtual walk in the park when you can do that outside, in RL. Some of the flight simulators are pretty good with realism too.

Attached is a pic of the outdoors in HL2. This is a scene along a foggy coastal highway.

but it's still one of those "visit exotic locations and meet interesting members of other cultures......then kill them" games isn't it? call me lame but are there any good games that aren't about shooting non stop and aren't The Sims? :D

edit: cool pic Loki. reminds me of the mediterranean coast.

Yeah, HL2 is like that. Your fighting to overthrown an alien run dictatorship. They seized power of Earth in a seven hour war. Sounds pretty silly, but it looks really good and is pretty immersive, so it all seems plausible.

I never really play them, but I have seen some really good looking golf games. Thats a nice outdoorsy environment where you dont have to kill anything.

Now I am looking for non shooting games that look real, thanks Zuzi. :p

This pic is from a car racing game, Trackmania Sunsrise, it looks pretty good.

Haha yes the difference in realism always hits me whenever I switch between HL2 and SL (what's with the twos and lifes in game names anyhow? I'm playing Second Half Life).

That's a nice shot of the bridge Loki, I love to replay the antlions levels.

Wow! I can't wait either.
Then again, I'll be in my 40's by then.

I suppose if we live long enough we'll be telling kids

"When I was your age we had to wait a few seconds for objects to appear and for textures to come into focus. And if it got crowded, everyone turned grey!"
