Yes, it is me once again. I whined before about missing out on the end of Beta event (and haven't ponied up for lifetime membership) and now I am whining about the fact that 2nd Life no longer works with Windows 98. Since it has always worked with my Windows 98, was it always windows 2000/XP only? i mean I even got it to work with dialup and low graphics card. Man this sucks, it will be a few months until I can upgrade to Windows 2000 or XP. Those programs aren't cheap ya know. Anyone have an old licensed copy of either program they can send or sell me. popname7@hotmail.com - Explorer One, still flying around in Welcome area since end of Beta. lol.

I have always looked in with win98 - and it was always a win2000/XP requirement. I am still logging in and happily playing my fav game ever Come back home lol

Maybe you can set something in your SL ini files to make it think it's WinXP? Trick it!

but some people cant
10-23-2003 10:50
Some people can only afford that which they are using and upgrading is a real financial hardship. Im not a w98 user, but i feel bad for people who are told to make changes that they cant because they cant afford it. No one likes being reminded they are poor or something. This isnt against you Lola, I still luv ya Just cant promise i'll be dancing at parties anymore since its bugged and it seems no one in charge can fix it. Briana

Lola I have just about every version of DOS and Windows that ever existed. It's just that my present hard drive is only 1 gig, and XP's disk space requirements are around 1 gig... so I will stick to 98SE for as long as SL will run under it.

I have XP on my laptop but I prefer this one. I dont think age alone can make me swap

Its not so much a matter of age as much as its a matter of support and development. Software companies (including Microsoft) are not developing applications and extensions with 98 in mind so much as they're developing with 2k/XP (nt kernel based).
And eggy: Have you considered Windows 2000? If memory serves me correctly, a fresh 2k install without many of the otherwise useless options is ~700 megs or so

Win2k generates a gigantic swap file for no reason, bigger than your memory in fact, so it would probably not leave me with any spare room. Keep in mind that SL needs a few hundred megs of disk space for cache

Eggy, what happens when you try to run the SL client on Win98? Does it give some error because you're on 98?

You can configure the disk cache of win2k, its in the system properties somewhere. Recommended is double your ram if you are below 512mb, equal to your ram if over 512mb I think. Something like that. Anyways, I think win2k can be done lean and mean, and swap file size adjusted.

No error, SL doesnt complain. The only thing thats not working is full screen for some reason i need to keep it windowed. I love win2k as much as the next guy, very stable system, I used to use it before my HD died and when christmas comes along and i get some money to play with i will surely be getting a decent HD and fill it with 2k, SL and everything else I can think of.

Oh and by the way, since we're talking about outdated windows versions I used to have this drive on a 486 running windows 3.11 and i could actually browse the web just fine with it. Flash apps bog down the CPU quickly but regular pages work great. IE5 is still available for windows 3.11 as of today.Tucows has a classic software section which is very useful for these geek projects

WOW, thanks for the responses..

It could be that I was not in true Windowed mode before the update came out and so I cannot get the updater to work right. I will attempt to do the download and then fresh install since I know it works for other 98 users. Thanks y'all for all the responses. It was way more than I was expecting. Why is it whenever I come here(and I am only here once every 3 months, yes Months!) that I create a firestorm? Much love, Explorer One

Much love,
Explorer One I'd hardly call this thread a firestorm ^_^ Look for the thread about Voice comm, or the thread 'Askl not what you can do for jessie'
