What was that closed beta deal again?

Hey had a question for the other oldies around here:

Back when closed beta, um, closed, we were offered some kind of lifetime deal. I've avoided asking the question until now purely because I still kick myself for not taking the Lindens up on it :( But curiousity has gotten the best of me, and I want to know from reliable sources: What was that deal, anyway? I remember something about $100 and having land forever, etc. What were the details?

*holds breath & wishes he could go back in time*

Thanks --- Sol

I came to SL around the 1.0 (Sep-03) release - past beta. After three days of forgetting to eat and sleep because of SL newb addiction, I wanted to throw cash at LL because they were cool. The only means of doing that was to buy a "lifetime" account of which there were a "limited number" available. They cost US$225 and they had the poor taste of waiting until my quarterly subscription ran out before charging me for the lifetime ;) .

At the time, there were no benefits associated with a lifetime account other then no monthly billing; it was a vote of confidence in, and support for SL's continued existence.

During the great economy revamp of 1.2 (or 1.3?) when prim taxes and rez costs were abolished, it was thought by LL that there should be some benefit extended to those who had bought lifetime accounts. This was where the 4096m "free tier for lifers" was announced. After the announcement was made, lifetime accounts were no longer sold. I recall being pleasantly surprised at the 4096m tier as I was having difficulty filling 1000m at the time.

I think some beta players purchased the same type of lifer account for somewhat less at the end of beta, but they'd have to tell you.

For Lifetime account in Beta you paid 160$US and received a SL Poster and T-Shirt :)

You also get 'charter member' in your profile

I never got a t-shirt, poster, or the words "Charter Member" in my profile. I have a $160 lifetime account, though! :)

Land didn't come with it per se, but charter members can hold 4096m without having to pay tier on it. The land still had to be purchased.

Yay for $160, 4096m..... tier free land 0.o... oh. Yes, we didn't have tier fees when it went live, but still, 4096m is better than nothing.

I got the shirt, then weeks later, the poster appeared. It arrived slightly damaged, but probably still suitable for framing. :D

I thought the price was actually $159.00. I have the poster and the T-shirt and Charter Member status.

It was $159. Later they raised it to $225.

I didn't get my mule either :( But I got all the other stuff. We have rights to hold 4096 of land in perpetuity without paying a cent more.

I remember the Forum discussions at the time as to whether to buy lifetime or not to buy lifetime and what was lifetime exactly? But if my memory serves me there was a deadline for those in Beta to get in on the US$159 one time payment. Didn't we have to pay before SL went live on June 22, 2003?

Anyhoo, I am Charter Lifetime, I didn't hesitate to plunk down my $$ and I have never regretted it.

I bought one of the last non-beta lifetime accounts in Dec '03 and have made back every cent. (More than every cent actually.) We didn't really get land with it but when the 1.2 land stuff was turned on (early '04?) they gave us 4096 square meters of tier in order to compensate us for the expectations we'd had in 1.1 and prior. Several lifetime members were very annoyed that they'd have to scale back their land holdings if they wanted to be at $0 a month.
