why does ll not limit the amount of storage our inventory items require? would the asset cluster not be better managed if each av had a limit on the amount of storage available to us. i suppose that would actually have to be stated in numbers of items or such.

or would it not make any difference? is the asset server model so utterly scalable that they can just keep adding to it's capacity without any worries of performance issues. yes i see the softdrinks snorting through your noses. no i'm not kidding. i'm genuinely curious.

Yeah, it was a very curious design decision.

Personally, sometimes I wish there was a limit just so I'd be better organised. At the very least, a per folder limit would be helpful.

eek!! No limits!! I have every item I have ever bought, made, or been given since I started over a year ago. Including my newbie items. haha.. I would hate to have to choose what to get rid of. :(

I would love to see a wildsearch feature added to the inventory though. :)

Oh, I completely agree, Pen! If I remember correctly from previous threads of this nature, inventory volume, itself, has no direct bearing on sim/system performance. I seem to remember reading that aspects of the inventory system are managed on the client side, as well. What, then, would be the catalyst for change?

I have everything since I began as well. Search would be great. It takes me and hour to find anything. When I am looking for something specific I always see some cool shit in my inventory I had forgotten about and start jacking with it. I rarely find the item I was originally looking for because I get all caught up playing with shit I find! Haha. :p

the asset database system has to keep track of every single item in our inventories. it's performance greatly affects our experience at every turn. the more we pile into the tables, the slower and more error prone it will be.

You can take the 50 or so full buildings in my inventory when you pry it from my cold, dead hands.

i shall clarify. i'm not suggesting that they suddenly impose a limit on us. i'm wondering why they haven't done it all along. i'm particularly wondering if they'll be able to keep this up. a LOT of our problems the past few releases have been directly tied to the asset system being unable to perform well enough to support the world. there's gotta be a critical point. i have the impression that ll is staying just one step ahead of it.

i know how that feels and i know how quickly a steadily patched system eventually melts through the floor. it may come down to cold virtual hands or no virtual hands. i suppose i should post this in cory's question list. i'd just rather have some answers than a graduate disertation on the changing paradigms of virtual asset management coupled with the effects of 3d streaming in a virtual economy.

Just barely.

omg.. limits will kill designers. I clean and organize my inventory regularly, but I have full copies of everything we have produced... and the boxes, and the box textures, and the variation...

I actually wondered this as well when I first started SL. I was amazed to find out that we could have unlimited inventory. I came from 5 years of EQ where there were always limits to inventory. You could buy bags to help increase space, but even that only went so far. And of course there was the bank, but it too had a limit. So yeah, I was thrilled to see SL have no limit, even if it did boggle me.

What if they did create a bank type server thingy? (don't you love my technical speak :p ) . A place where we could go to store items? It would only store the items we put in it. Our inventories would still count towards the current asset server. If they had this "storage bank" on a seperate server than everything else, wouldn't it help things all around?

Simple Solution let us keep our inventories client side ...Period. This muddling mess of inventory we currently have is attrocious. If we didnt have to store it on a LL server then the servers wouldnt be bogged down with mishmash content.

Id say if its in inventory and not out in the world its maintained on your client side PC.

If its in world and viewiable by everyone then its on the LL Server.

Simple effective and would probably speed things up for everyone.

Just my .02$
