one for you SL lovers out there .

Do you think SL can become the new (world wide web) ???

Think about this. You would log in not with IE. or (otheres) But you would log in to your AV.
with the help of the scripters out there. you can make a script that takes your billing info when you go to buy something. and have it shiped to you. just like the web now days.

for Exmaple. (Linden labs can builed a best buy store in world or thay can who care's. all the stuff thay sell would be there. you clik it and buy it with RL money or maybe lindens to =/. )

I think SL could take over the web at some point what dos everyone think about it post your thoughts here

I doubt SL would replace the WWW. I mean... why would I want to log into a fully-rendered 3D environment, to browse for text/image information? That's an awful lot of overhead. :

Of course, as technology marches on, this overhead might become insignificant, so... I guess I'll have to reserve judgement. :)

every one talks about a 3D environment web at some point . as the computers get more up there in speed and power it becomes more and more likely that someone would try it out. Linden labs as one if not the best 3d environment out there. and thay all realy have it so you can acsess the web from in game in the forum of radio streams. thes radio streams can be just the start of acessing the web through the game grid. witch would take SL to a new level

In a few years, this will all seem puny and laughable in hindsight. Just like how 256-color VGA graphics are now, or how Netscape 1.1 -- or *gasp* even Mosaic is. But ah, where will be then? I'm excited. :)

As of now, no. Why? 2 reasons: First off, SL is way too resource-hungry to become an everyday browser. Though it would be nice to see it happen one day.
Second, the point of browsers/the web itself was to create a simple, easy-to-use interface to access the net. Something as complex as SL as a browser would turn quite a few people off (Mostly the casual computer-user type).

What would be neat, however, is if your idea were reversed; if there were some way to access the WWW from within SL...

Well, sort of. It was developed so that physicists could collaborate with one another more effectively over the net.

In a word, no. The Internet rose in popularity when it became easy to use by the average person. Some aspects of SL have a steep learning curve. We've all heard the odd stories of people leaving before their 7 day trials ended because SL was "too hard".

Someday, the Internet may evolve into a virtual 3D world. If LL is involved, it will probably be a radically different form of SL that probably won't even be called Second Life. It will be easy to use, and the PCs (or whatever we use to access the net) in the future will easily handle it.

And if and when it does happen, some of us will be like "TOLD YA SO!" and we'll leap up excitedly from our wheelchairs, and get even more excited and scream "WE CAN WALK AGAIN!!!" er... wait... wrong timeline... *sighs* :)

Nope. No replacement... When people search for something on the internet, they want (well most of the time) information... SL is not an efficient way to get information. Or if it's entertainment they're looking for, it's still not efficient. Especially due to the fact that most people don't have supercomputers sitting on their desks to run it on. ;) (Unless you're some weirdo who likes huge 3D worlds where you can build almost anything you want! Geez!)

WTF is C3PO supposed to be USEFUL for anyway, besides whining? Stupid piece of scrap metal would be more useful recycled as a toaster. But even that would suck, because who would want to listen to a whining wussy toaster? Is he gold plated? If that's the case he should just be melted down into gold ingots. Help the economy some, and stop being so damn useless you stupid bucket of bolts! R2 is 1,000 times more useful than your tin man ass, and he's shaped like a salt and pepper shaker FFS!

More than 50% of the Internet is pornography.

I think SL's got "what people search for on the Internet" down ;)

Interesting point. I think the day when SL becomes a XXX porn world we can safely conclude that it has taken over the WWW.

At its worst, SL barely scratches an R rating. When we see the first actual av pregnancy or STD, we will have crossed over into XXX material. :D

The web has already shown that it has great advantages over brick-and-mortar stores for shopping efficiency and the rise of services like SLexchange.com only amplify that.

Edward Tufte has already well shown that spatial metaphors for information navagation are woefully inadequate for most purposes. We currently shop for stuff in RL malls because stuff historically needed a place to put it.

SL is good for many things, shopping isn't one of them. Now if real stores could stock "one size really fits all" clothes like SL does, then we'd see a path beaten to their door.
