Is it possible to run two instances on Second Life simultaneously on one computer? I searched the forums but couldn't find anything to that extent.

This would be great to know for those who get double vision due to alcohol on party nights! :D

I bet your graphics card would either explode or meltdown. I just use two computers.

I experimented under MacOS with running two instances of SL, each under a different user. It worked, albeit rather slowly, but it would require a much faster computer (and probably a lot more RAM) to be usable.

It's hard enough getting SL to run well in a single instance - maybe when the 10Ghz G6's come along...

Eltee accidentally got 2 instances running yesterday. Dunno how well they ran on her end, but she seemed to be able to control both her regular and alt avs just fine from what I could tell.

Watching 2 Eltees perform the Yatta dance in unison was... intriguing, to say the least.

There are two ways of doing two instances.

One is to just click the icon real fast and it'll bring up two versions.

Second is to add something to the shortcut.

I think if you simply add a \w to the end of the address for the shortcut it will work, like newview.exe \w

Hey Toy! Nope, SL tries to load then just exits, which at least is better than the "newview is already running" message.

You can run 2 at the same time. Just double click it really fast like Damien said. I do it regularly.

Once I ran 3 second life clients, with 20 fps on each client :)

Nope, I can't. They both launch and one thinks it has recovered from a crash and wants me to send an error report, then says thats newview is running. Hmmmm...

I can get two copies running with no trouble under Linux, but only one of them will have keyboard focus and a properly-functioning network connection.

I had 4 avs dancing :p

What I did to trick the newview was to first load another program like DAoC and then quadrouple click while that loaded ;)

Not much fun with four because of lack of speed but I have a fun picture of my 4 avs together :p

Is it just that I have an insanely fast computer? Dunno. I wrote a loop that tied up 99% of the CPU and clicked way fast. Same results. I compacted some databases and managed to fire off four instances of SL by clicking like a madman. Three of them caught the first instance and wouldn't run.

But I doubt that speed comes into play. I ran a batch file with two "start c:\progra~1\second~1\newview.exe" lines and it still gave me the same results. (For those who don't know, that batch file "clicks" on the icon at the speed of 3 billion clicks per second.)

I'm going to have to play around with PIDs and see if I can trick it that way. I tried running the second instance as admin, but nyet.
