CTL 1 - 5 Yes, Pie Menu No!

I figured this was worth posting more visibly than buried in the feature suggestion forum.

Many seem to not know that the top 5 icons in the object windows (Focus, Move, Edit, Create, Land) can be accessed by hitting CTL 1 - 5.

This has the EXTREME benefit of NOT resetting the camera when you work!

Example...say you are standing on floor 1, and Alt-View with the mag glass up to floor 3 (no need to focus on something first and then adjust views...just hold ALT to bring up the mag glass and do your bit).

On floor 3, there's an object you want to move/edit. You may be tempted to right click and select focus. This will reset your camera angle...oh lord why hast thou forsaken me!

Instead, just hit CTL 3. This will bring up your object window in edit mode, with nothing selected. Then just click your object; your focused, and ready to go. No pie menu or camera fuss or muss.

Same for creating. Alt-view to your location, CTL 4, your ready to click 'n create. When you create, you're auto-focused on the object at your current view...hit CTL 3 and your ready to edit. To switch objects, NEVER lose focus...just make sure you're in edit mode (CTL 3) while working on your current object, and click on the next object.

Personally, I never, ever use the pie menu, or the Focus/Move icons (you get focus and can move objects while in edit mode), when I build. They slow you down and cause you camera grief. I teach this at all my building 101s, maybe it should be standard content for all instructors. Makes you a better builder; more consistent views, speeds you up, factors out frustration. When building, unless an object is out of range, there is no need, at all, to move your avatar if you know this trick (oh but how do I change my view on an object I'm focused on two floors away? Hold down alt while focused...and do your thing).

Oh and...this makes editing scripts anywhere in the house easy too. A good thing to know about this is if you get the script open, you don't have to stay focused on the object to work on it and test it. Open the script, lose focus, and happily wander around editing other objects. Just leave that script window open and you can edit and save it..you can work on multiple scripts this way. Just don't forget which object the scripts are on (that's happened to me).

Go forth and build ye heathens.

I was at your scripting class last night, and I just want to thank you. I always miss the classes for scripting and I've been trying to learn and It's been a big pain. After last night, things are a whole lot more clear.
Unfortunately for you, you've created a monster... I'll be around.
Thanks Again.

And all this time, here we are telling Lindens to make the camera swinging optional.

How silly of us, who ask for more hotkeys, to not even use the ones we have!

Good find :D

This is interisting, *bump*

Seems locking cameras are an old ongoing thing, maybe this will help some people.

We still need a way to LEAVE edit mode without resetting the camera. :(
