I thought I'd mention this since I haven't seen anyone else mention it (not listed on the "in the news" section of the SL website either).
There's a short (half page) article about Second Life in this months Edge magazine (issue 147) by Tim Guest.
The article is actually about the use of SL in a care home for the disabled. One of the carers is an SL player and she mentioned it to the residents who were keen to join in the fun. After much pursuasion the management agreed to let the residents play (nine of them sharing the same user) as long as it was limited to 4 hours a week. Apparently they enjoy it because physically at least, everyone is equal in SL.

Good find.
Sounds like the tale of Wilde Cunningham is still spreading.

Yes, now you mention it. I didn't realise the sotry was so well known. It didn't appear to me to be that great an idea to give the username in question, but if it's already well known...

Thanks Richard. However, I must state that this article raised ??? and is being looked into for several reasons: -Jadey and I don't recall ever having talked to Tim -we believe some quotes were taken out of context and misrepresented -portions of this article, including direct quotations, are similar to the earlier article of Hamlet Linden's which appeared here: http://secondlife.blogs.com/nwn/2005/01/man_and_man_on_.htmlJust to clarify. So yeah, like The Prisoner (fave old Brit show of mine), WE NEED INFORMATION.

I'm not sure myself if it was miscommunication but I edited my earlier post -- I wouldn't want to make any foolish assumptions. LOL Richard, "naughty journo", that's a great term.

Aha, Tim Guest was the writer! OK, now I know what's going on. I've talked with Tim a number of times about virtual worlds and SL specifically. I've spoken with a lot of writers and journalists over the years as part of my job, and I gotta say...Tim is the most thoughtful one I've ever met. Just an all-around great guy who asks amazingly insightful questions. He seems to be genuinely interested in virtual worlds and how communities evolve and grow within them. He wrote a bestselling book in the UK called "My Life in Orange." It was just just released in the USA. I've read it. Really amazing. And related to the topic of his book....no...I am sure he does not think of SL as a "cult" or anything like that. I believe he "groks" the potential of virtual worlds like SL to truly change peoples lives in wonderful ways. I cannot find Edge magazine in the US anywhere...could someone please scan these articles for me? If the scans are too big to attach to posts here and if you don't have a place to host them on the web, please email them (danger.diabolik@gmail.com) to me and I'll put them on my own website. Thank you!
