Some of you may already know that "Syd" was my real life sister. I brought her into SL when she came to stay with me a few weeks ago as part of an attempt to kick a decade-long addiction to crack. I am sad to say that this evening the addiction finally won, and she was brought into a local ER a few hours after she died from a massive heart attack at the age of 27.

You may see me online under her name in the next few days. I would like to have copies of the things she was working on. If you do see me on in her persona, I ask that you not IM. I am still learning to accept this, and think it would be difficult to tell any of you individually what has happened.

Many of you may also be suprised to find that I will probably still be in world as much as I ever have been, and not anxious to have this be a focus of my attention. I loved "Syd" but I have also pulled her out of enough alleys and crack houses that this is not a suprise. I ask that you respect my grief without judging it. I choose to believe that she is, at the very least, finally free of her demons and to go on with my life as it was before.

Oh Bhodi, I'm so very sorry to hear about your loss! I'm watching a close friend fight the same battle and know how difficult it is to break away from the vicious circle. My thoughts are with you.

I've thought of this a lot. When I played in Alphaworlds, they had a graveyard in game. It was a permanent place and required special permissions to build in, but folks could get permission and build memorials to residents that had passed on. I think this would be a very wonderful addition to the world. And maybe Bhodi's sister could be remembered by her friends in game.

Bhodi, I am so sorry to hear this. I don't think I ever met Syd in game, but I'm impressed that she made her mark in the short time she was here.

For those of you who didn't make the connection (as I didn't, at first), Syd was responsible for the "Syd's Second Life" comic strip.

In addition to commiserating with Bhodi, we all have another reason to mourn: the passing of our community's first social satirist.

And let me second Phoenix's suggestion that we create an in-game memorial for Second Lifers who have passed away in real life. Oak Grove would be the right place to put it, in my opinion. It wouldn't be out of place thematically, no residents would have to be displaced to make room, and the name simply fits: "Oak Grove Memorial Park".

Again, Bhodi, my condolences.

I'm very sorry to hear the sad news. I was just getting to know Syd, and although I'd only had a few conversations with her, I will miss her presence in the world.

There was, once upon a time, a tomb in the waters near the edge of Clementina. Unfortunatly it was wiped out when SL went live and old Beta accounts were deleted. I think an underwater site (if such a project is undertaken) should be considered.

I want to thank everyone for their good thoughts, particularly those who have lost other loved ones in the same way and know how conflicted and difficult that makes the situation. It's been comforting to keep the forums up as I'm writing distant relatives with the news and to have the support without the "we always knew" kind of crap.

Bhodi, I am so very sorry for your loss. Your obvious love and devotion to your sister made me shed tears from your words alone.
