Now I can pay the 9.99 fee once, and play SL while I wait to find another job (montly entertainment fees are a no-no when out of work!)

For me, I lost no prims (I don't own any I keep in the world) no money (Ditn have anything rezzed, probably never will), no land (I'm just not a... land owner type person... I'm happy with never having to worry about a virtaul house, as if a real one isnt enough worry).

So I'm very happy with 1.2. I feel sorry for those who had managed to accumulate like half a sim in land before 1.2 and must give some of it up, but seriously... a single user with a bunch of textures and prims is capable of causing SL to send me 250k/s for a sustained few minutes... thats more bandwidth in a few minutes than most mmorpgs will send you IN THEIR ENTIRE LIFETIMES. I can't imagine how that must cost.

It just sounds much more right now - you pay for as much as you consume. I dont see anything wrong with that. Its how it should have been from the beginning. You can't run a MMO in which users can generate unbeleivable amounts of server load and bandwidth and memory use, without charging people on a consumption basis...

charging a flat rate for something which some people consume a tiny fraction of and others consume almost all of is an insanity that ISPs are starting to realise too (here come the caps / pricing schemes!)

The problem with the "You pay for what you consume" notion is that a LOT of folks were not consumers, but creators. Did it occur to you that the vast majority of things to DO in SL were not put there by the Lindens? They were created and placed by the users. And now a lot of that stuff will have to come down.

The new system does indeed work well for the consumers, however it gives a major shaft to those that were creating content. So those consumers out there are going to start to see much less stuff to consume.

It doesn't matter whether you made it or not.

When I say 'consume' I'm not talking about L$.

I'm talking about the real world $ that your beautiful stuff CONSUMES.

So you make a really pretty house. Okay, people buy it for L$. Whatever. But in the real world, that house costs REAL US$ in order to maintain (server load), send to every user that sees it, again US$, and the cost in US$ is proportionate to the amount of space it takes up on the server and how much bandwidth it takes up which is generally proportionate to prims / land.

So when I say 'you pay for what you consume' I'm talking about the real world dollars of value you consume by creating something which generates constant upkeep cost and bandwidth for Linden Labs.

You used to be able to pay a flat rate for potentially infinite real world dollar upkeep costs. That kind of pricing scheme does NOT make sense. Other MMORPGs do not allow people to generate that kind of upkeep and traffic, and can thus charge a flat rate.

So now your monthly fee relates to how much us dollars it costs Linden to actually keep active the resources you consume.

This is what I meant by consumption based. You are consuming real world resources by creating things, resources which have an actual dollar cost in real dollars.

Besides which, when new routines are added, new physics, or computing power increases, I'm sure we'll see a gradual increase in the 'prims per square meter' allowance ratio.

Not to sound like a broken record but we've already seen a 50% increase from 10,000 prims to 15,000 prims.
