I was just in SL when I received a dialog that said "You have been logged out of Second Life," and that I could log back in if I wanted. Only, when I tried to log back in, I got stuck at "Contacting user server..." and sent back to the password screen.

I hope we're not going to start seeing a pattern of being unable to log in when there are a lot of people in-world, or something silly like that.

Had the same last night, getting stuck at Getting Inventory... gave up after 5 tries. Was on Europe time so not alot of people logged in at that moment...

I tried to log in earlier and also got stuck at Contacting User Server.. I gave up so I don't know how long it lasted.

On the login screen go into preferences and check the "log in at home location" box, it has worked for me in the past.

it's at least worth a try

It may be coincidence, but I've noticed these problem the day before updates. Perhaps the Lindens are doing pre-work on the servers for the update and they're pulling double duty? This is the third or fourth time I've noticed problems the day before. Just a thought.

As someone who crashes regularly on SL, I've found that if I try to connect while the crash logger is doing its thing, I frequently get stuck at "contacting user server." But if I wait until it's done, or failing that, try a second time, it allows me in.

But as I said, I crash like *all* the time, so my problems may be different than yours. ;)

How the problem was solved for me
11-10-2004 09:10
After repeated problems stalling at various locations, I tried relogging at a different location and no luck. Also did uninstall and reinstall -- again no luck....a Linden suggested it was my Norton Security. I disabled and had no problems logging in. Only now it seems i have to disable every time i log in.
