I know I'm going to get jumped for this posting big time, but that's actually why I'm doing it - so hey, go for it.
I'm still a relatively new person, and have been avoding the forums at all costs, unless someone points out a particular post of interest to me. Why? Because I've never seen so many sarcastic comments, senseless arguments and downright orneriness in my life.
The straw that broke the camel's back right now is that I just did a search to get information on something I'd like to try to build. I saw someone who had asked a simple question, in the appropriate forum, and was made fun of. It wasn't an opinion forum, it wasn't a voilatile subject, it was a simple basic question. I'm sitting here shaking my head in absolute disgust. You think I'm going to bother asking a question anywhere in these forums? No way on earth.
In a world where anything is possible, where we have the opportunity to build and shape something entirely new and different and wonderful, why oh why do people insist on dragging the worst aspects of rl into it?
This is Second Life, leave the crappiness of First Life out of it.

Or just ask me in-world, I'd be glad to help.
Forums are for the bored or home-ridden, usually.

I've noticed that, but since I'm not one for censorship, I don't mind all the sarcastic comments and catfighting that goes on. Course it is pretty lousy for newbies like us; I imagine quite a few are run off from posting (and the game) that way.
What bugs me a lot more, though, is when I'm looking for an answer to something, and I find an appropriate thread where the question was asked (or something similar), and one or maybe two people answer appropriately, then the thread degenerates into an in-groupy type conversation, kidding around, possibly talking about something I couldn't possibly understand, and in any case not relating at all to the original question, and goes on like that for a page or two, then the thread dies.
Much as I dislike overweaning moderation, it kind of makes me wish some moderators were keeping the thread on topic in cases like this. I waste a lot of time mulling through all that unrelated junk (people could kid around somewhere else) when I have something technical I need to know. Very irritating. Especially when I know most of the people goofing off in the thread have a lot of knowledge on the topic supposedly at hand, and could probably be helping me and the original poster instead of goofing off and listening to themselves be clever.

coco unfortunately most threads tend to de-evolve from the origional point and it's not just on this forum for SL it's happened on boards where we are discussing string theory and general semantics even...

Claire, welcome to Second Life.
The forums are a bit wild and wooly sometimes, but we're working hard to make them kindler and gentler to new residents who have honest questions.
Everyone, remember....these forums are an opportunity for you all to help make SL better. The future of SL *depends* on encouraging new residents to share their ideas.
Please think about that before you post something sarcastic and potentially offensive, ok? The only people you all are hurting are yourselves, in the end...
