Some generic questions that...

I've been trying to find the answers to.. hahaha

I found second life this past week through someone who said I should check it out... since then I've gone and bypassed most of the free trial and signed up for the basic account..(until I learn more) I've learned about navigation, events, I've even started making my own clothes and actually getting them to work in SL... (gotta have my own.. hahaha)

I'd love to set up a shop someplace, in time, once I get a ton of stuff to put in it.. hahaa

But along the road to this far, I have some questions I just can't find the answers for... hopefully some of you good people can point me to them, or explain things I just haven't grasped yet.. ;)

The first question I have... seems to not be a common one... I've signed up, and my husband would like to as well...(surprisingly enough) Is it possible to just add him into my account and pay his sign up fee under my account (credit card, etc) or do I need to put all that info in again and create a new account?

Also I have a few questions about prims/property...
If I buy a first land, the 512 square meters... is that actuallya whole 512x512? (I've never been good at math) I find it mind blowing to have that much space.. that's a ton!
And the prims/property ratio... different proprties have different prim allotment? or os it pretty much standard... a 1024square meter plot allows x amount of prims?

Also is the terrain itslf actually editable as well? such as a property on a hillside, could I dig and flatten, make holes and such?

Ahhh so many questions from an eager new member.. hahah

Thanks in advance for all the help :)

Yes, you can sign you husband with basic under the same card. You can even do monthly.
You can even run them both on the same IP with a router. Although your bandwidth my suffer and you could catch eachother's IMs sometimes.

As for 512m2, I beleive so. You'll have to wait for the experts on that mess. But if you own the land you can edit the terrain, yes.

thanks Burke... :) now to figure out how... hahaha We have a high speed cable connection here with the internet networked wirelessly throughout the house so the connection problem wouldn't be an issue ;)

Your land would be something like 16x32. 16 times 32 = 512 square meters.

Hee... I think 512m x 512m is something like 4 entire sims. :D

Hi Alysa, welcome to SL!

A 512m2 lot comes with 117 prims, I believe. If you want to open up a clothing store, you'll want to at least double that, especially if you plan to sell via box instead of vendors. But First Land is a great option if you want to learn building, and if you need more prims there's the possibility of tiering up and buying more land in the same sim, which will allow you more prims to play with.

512 sq meters is almost always 16 meters by 32 meters (standard first land size). In all but 4 sims (the city sims) you can put 117 prims on 512m2, 234 on 1024m2, 468 on 4096m2 etc. The ratio is the same, to give 15,000 prims per sim.

Terrain is editable, but on the newer sims (Baku and further east) it is limited to plus or minus 4 meters from whatever the original Linden-set height was. Terraforming is an art, not a science, and it takes skill to get the shape you want exactly.

thanks everyone for the input, I really appreciate the help.. :)

Ok, so leme se if I understand a little better now...

my hubby can sign in under my account, with his own name? It may be better tho, I'm thinking to just sign him in with a new account, and use the same last name.. hahaha that way he get's HIS mails and IM's to his mail addy, and not mine..

and a basic 512sqM plot is about 16x32 in size and I can have basicly 217 prims to make the house and furniture on it... for a store, I'd probably want to rent mall space or something anyhow, so this will be fine :)

Off to sign him up now ;)

Thanks again for all the help everyone.. :D

Ok, after I signed him up, having to forgo the trial period cause one was already use on my CC, We get him all signed up and installed.... His laptop has a Intel graphics gard... UGGG It keeps crashing on him...

What are the chances He can get this to work? and what are the chances if not, that I can get that 9.95 back if not? haha

I believe each avatar is its own account. You can have up to 5 accounts per credit card, though. He will have to go through the same registration process and get an account of his own, but its a fairly simple process.

That's probably just a typo, but its 117 prims, not 217, for a 512m2 plot.

If you ever plan on owning land, make sure you take advantage of the First Land program and get a plot dirt cheap. If you decide to get something bigger or better later, you can make a tidy profit selling it. Heck, even if you don't want land at the moment, you can buy some and turn right around and sell it at a profit... Its a frequently used method of making a chunk of dough for new players. If your hubby is going to have a premium account also, the two of you can try to get adjoining First Land plots. Get a buddy to join you in creating a Group (you need at least 3 people to make one), and the two of you can set both plots to group land and turn it into one parcel if you like... especially good if the two of you want a larger home or want to open a shop on the land.

But do know that some router/NAT boxes need to be tweaked to keep SL happy. Sorry, too lazy to find the thread right now. :(

An intel graphics chip will usually make SL not pleasing enough to play; I know of no way around that as the intel chip is not a 3D processor. A Ge-Force4 4200ti is dirt-cheap ($50?) and will do a competent job with SL (i.e. won't knock your socks off, won't suck).

thanks Malachi... unfortunately it's a laptop so I'm not sure there's any chance of an upgrade.. and sinceit's still rather new (to us) We won't be getting a new one soon for him.... but at least if at some point I decide to trade my desktop in for a lap top (really want to) i know what to look for ;)

Oh, 'tis just a matter of time. At first you don't notice that monkey on your back, and then it starts scratching and you find you *must* feed it. Then you realized that you've spent the better part of the day trying to twist a prim into just the right shape, while your spouse has gotten 360 consecutive "Just a minute Honey, while I finish this *one* thing". You then log out and use the lavatory and eat - as you had forgotten to do so - to come back and find that your spouse didn't want your attention but your CPU and is now saying "Just a minute while I finish this *one* thing". You leave the house in frustration but desperate. You find yourself combing the streets for an internet cafe that's open at 3am; you even start approaching random people on the street asking where you can get some "net". They look at you confused and back away slowly. Your soon-to-be-former friends start talking behind your back saying things like "since when did she become Alysa?" and "are these Malachi and Eggy and Nogard that she's always talking about imaginary friends"? They plot an "intervention" and give up as they know what to do to help alcoholics but this is way beyond them.

Enjoy SL :D

whaoooo my head is my space, noone's allowed in my head!! ;)

God isnt that the truth!

I caved in and bought myself a plot last night.. If only it were possible to model something in my regular modelling program, then import it into SL.. would save a LOT of lag time.. hahahaha
