I'm not a tech person, so I may be completely wrong, but......

I believe Havok is the physics engine that SL uses, and Havok2 is the upgrade that is coming sometime in the future.

Princess is correct. Havok is some technology that Linden Labs licenses for use in the SL servers, and does all the physics calculations. Havoc 2 is an upgrade to the current technology used by LL, but has not yet been incorporated.

Word has it that Havoc 2 will cure a lot that ails SL, but when it will be added is anybody's guess. Its been promised for as long as I have been around (April/04), but apparently LL is currently focused on fixing what they have, and not spending a lot of resources adding new features (a wise move, in my view).

Unless you're a heavy duty scripter of vehicles, weapons, or other objects that make use of the physics engine, its nothing you need to worry about, beyond looking forward to the day when Havoc 2 makes all of these things work better.

Just to add in, Havok 2 actually runs a lot of the physics for a lot of the games out there, including a lot of "rag-doll" type stuff. and Havok 2 will allow us to do a WHOLE lot more, but Havok 3 is almost(maybe already) released, soo by the time we get 2 it will probably be pretty watered down and used up.

maybe the big delay is they're waiting on Havok 3 so they don't do all the work for an old version. i'm still new to all the physics stuff. how will a new version help?

Ten thousand people playing with an old toy means that old toy will do things the toy designers never thought it could do.

I'm certain the designers of SL didn't know that half the stuff that came out was possible. Like the invisibility script, for example. It's amazing what the bazaar can come up with.
