New version of Yahoo Messenger

For those who are fans of YIM (it happens to be my fave of the IM clients), there is a major new version available at http://messenger.yahoo.com. Look for the link on the right that says Preview new messenger - it is not version 5.6. Currently in beta, some new features include Launchcast radio integration, avatars (kind of like AOL superbuddies but less obnoxious and more customized), new emoticons, a new type of icon/sound called audibles, some new multiplayer games, and a completely revamped look. Overall a pretty impressive upgrade of an already excellent IM program. Check it out if you are interested.

Thanks bro! The update is fantastic! I've used Yahoo for a few years for my IMing and this is a significant upgrade. If you use Yahoo, YOU NEED THIS. The addition of avatars (although fairly simple at this time) is a cool little touch. The interface with contacts as well as expanded privacy controls are welcome additions. I could continue on but I won't. Go download it and see for yourself

I just downloaded it last night and I think it is pretty cool. Haven't had much chance to play around with it yet, but I did create my avitar. I am gonna try and mess around with it somemore when I get home this evening.

Would anyone be interested in posting their Yahoo names here so we could start a huge massive chat room one night and all talk "live" to each other instead of typing? Just an idea.

Nah, they are not very sophisticated - they are more related to buddy icons than anything else. They remind me of the Superbuddies from AOL, but thankfully they don't make any noise. A fun little feature, but they are not controllable. Now if Yahoo adds a subscription based version with extra content for the avatars were it costs $10 for a virtual shirt, then you have There

Thanks for the headsup, downloaded it this morning! Spent an hour or so playing MahJong Solitaire while listening to the radio. Very impressive, and I like the way individual users can be selected to make yourself invisible to! My Yahoo ID is ah_flossy.
