I'd like to create a display of a Second Life version of the AIDS Memorial Quilt for World AIDS Day, December 1st. My idea is for people to create 1m x 2m "panels" for the quilt (as textures), and then assemble and display it for a week.

I'm trying to gauge interest in such an event, and if people would want to create panels for it. If there's any interest, I'll hold weekly "quilting bees" up until the event, then provide a display area for the event itself. Depending on how many panels we get, I could get up to a whole sim to display them in.

Of course, I'll store any panels created indefinitely for periodic displays, or perhaps some sort of permanent installation.

You should talk to the Lindens about using Lime for the display. The sim is rentable for $1000 lindens a day I think....but for something like this they might contribute to the cause.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I already have plenty of options for land for the display. Though it might be nice to put it someplace that gets a lot of traffic, so it's seen by more people.

This is an astounding project and I wish you the best. Let me know if there is anything I can do.

Great idea for a project. I would very much like to make a section for the quilt. I'll keep an eye on this thread for more news.

I might make one depicting Freddie Mercury. That man was a genius, and he died because of aids...

I'm going to have an intitial quilting bee sometime next week to give people info on how to construct panels, and to let people discuss other things we might do around a quilt display event. I'll update this thread as soon as I have set a date.

Quilting Bee

Hi Folks. I'm Cory Bauhaus' alter ego. Don't be confused =)

We have just one month until World AIDS Day, so it's time to get in gear for making a quilt. I'm going to host the first quilting bee this coming Thursday evening. (I'd do it sooner but election madness is bound to interfere Tues and Weds.) I'll post details later, but plan on 8pm at Hexamon House in the SE corner of Zoe. We'll be talking about what we can do with this event, as well as going over guidelines for how to make panels for the quilt.

By the way, if anyone wants to help script the system for displaying the quilt, I'd be happy to have some assistance. I'm thinking of an object that gets the panel textures from its inventory and rezzes prims to display them on. Seems simple and probably is, but the organization and management of all the various bits might get complicated.

See you Thursday night!
