Howdy, I'm newish... Was just wondering, why is the sound volume in SL way too quiet compared to the rest of my programs? I have "system volume" all the way up, and I have the 3 'effect/factor' sliders almost all the way down. Yet, anything on my computer that makes sounds (winamp, AIM, etc) is blowing my ears off when I turn my speakers up high enough to hear SL. I realize there a bunch of factors related to the volume of sounds in SL, but even when I'm right on top of something, it's just not loud enough comparatively!

Probably has nothing to do with it, but I noticed the farther (further?) you have the camera from your av, the quiter some sounds get.

I have had the same problem for a while now also SteveR, I can't get a handle on how to adjust it.
I can hear the typing and the helicopter blades in mouselook for example, but not in normal mode.

For me, sounds were greatly improved by reducing the "Rolloff" and "Distance" slider. Mine are quite a bit to the left.

What a simple solution,,, it seems to have worked for me. I had them pushed to the max, I put the sliders on the minimum, now I hear footsteps, typing and my clapping. Thanks Jillian!!!!

Yeah, I figured that out, it's actually a cool effect that I'd like to use, but since I can't hear much I just turn them down. SL versus other programs just isn't loud enough. Using Winamp as an example: I have Winamp at 1% volume, and SL at the max, and still SL is just audible while Winamp is rupturing my ear drums. It's like that with all my other programs, as well.

Not much to hear in SL unless you're at a club streaming music.

go to your sound options and turn the rolloff setting to about 1/5, down from the default 1/2 setting on the slider.
This will make you hear things significantly more realistically, not dropping off from distance so quickly.

Hiro has mentioned this several times, and again, I concur. The default settings can be uncomfortably steep. I would suggest too that the changes be made -- and perhaps for consideration in future versions of SL as well.

I guess it's just me... Is I said my original post, I have those turned down already. Here's the main problem. I don't listen to streaming music much, but when I decide to do so, I have to turn the volume on my speakers up such that, when I turn streaming off and winamp on, I better be quick with the volume knob or I'm practically blowing my speakers out. And this is with SL volume all the way up, and winamp at 1% it's volume! I even tried it by streaming the same url from both winamp and my land on SL, so it's not the music itself. There's nothing I can do to counteract this, as both winamp and SL are controlled by the "wave" slider on my system volume controller. And it's not winamp because it's on par with all the other sounds my computer makes. I'm wondering now If it's something to do with my computer, because apparently it's not that much of an issue with anyone else.

From: Lumina Lumiere Not much to hear in SL unless you're at a club streaming music. Au contraire! Come by the ground level of Abbotts Aerodrome sometime. Listen to the peaceful sounds of the shoreline and the woodland creatures (what very little woodland is left after all the land development we've done). Listen to the jets take off and land above. Dynamic sound adds a depth to the Second Life world that cannot be matched by other means. I have personally found that things sound best with the "rolloff" setting about 1/5 of the way from the left side. I have a 5.1 sound setup, but I think SL only uses left and right channels.

I agree with Apoth, nothing like cruising around Taber or FairChang Island, listening to the birds, crickets, frogs and ducks. I have been missing all that lately by having foolishly moving my sliders. I enjoy being able to hear the footsteps of someone coming to see you, and the beginning of their typing which signifies that they want to chat with you.
