i found Hiro's question to be interesting and Robin's answer was enlightening.

in response, i started thinking about the discussions SLers have had about "what do we call the mainland?" as they could theoretically relate to said answer.

to quote the thought-provoking passage:
From: someone
posted by Robin Linden: We had a lot of ideas for place names --- one of my favorites was Sansara, which was not only euphonic, but had an interesting meaning in the original Sanskrit, meaning roughly 'ever changing world'.

with this in mind, i'm wondering (with the advent of a new continent/land mass on the horizon) if there's been any thought given to bestowing continents with unique names. either way, i would like to suggest one of Robin's favorites as a name for the mainland: (in case you hadn't guessed) Sansara.

the meaning of this name is perfect for SL in general and would be befitting of the mainland. of course, that means a continental name would be needed for the new land mass.

I'm glad I slipped that one in! Seems like a good idea for a discussion, so I'm copying this thread to the General discussion forum.

Sansara

Que sera sera might be a better name, given how often the game crashes.

Now that the grid has gotten so large, I think that we should standardize some of our naming conventions.

We ought to:

-Give Magellan a boot in the ass to finish up his explorations, and open up the new area, so that we can see whether this "new land" is a fresh continent, a different grid, or a point-release (1.6).

-Differentiate between the Experience/Game/Gridverse, and the World itself inside SL, and the continents that make up the world. Similiar to how Africa and North America are both continents on the Earth, which exists in our Real-Life universe.

-Since the Lindens have decided on a grid made up of an artifical geographic continuity, they need to decide how this continuity, and the associated geographic/stellar metaphors will extend from it. Is our current landmass "it"? Is there more, always to be added from the outer edges? Or is it considered to exist on a larger planet, perhaps with other landmasses on it? What are the names for the planet, and the various landmasses? Are there other planetary bodies, also with landmasses? What are their names? What geographic or stellar metaphor will we use when we introduce self-hosted sims down the road sometime?

Lindens, you thrust this whole "geographic" grid on us, in effect decided how our server space would be represented. Now you need to get with it, and let us know what's what with the world and gridverse past what we can see on the map. ;)

Mom, Grandma and Grandpa Baysklef and Great Grandma Thetan said this world used to be known as "Urtahra." I wouldn't mind seeing it put back into good use...

Like a Stephen King villain, this is something I know by many names: Second Life, metaverse, betaverse, Sansara (as Robin cued me onto previously), etc.

Personally, I most commonly call it the gridverse or Agni Prime -- differing Agnis, or alternate virtual realities, are where other versions of Torleys live, such as the blue-and-orange one found roaming the 1.6 Preview grid and who adores tangerines -- tho. ;)
